View Full Version : What does this mean?

What could be causing this? My car has done this before but it went away like a week later, well now its doing it again. When i accelerate "too hard"-which is not very much- the revs rise too quickly and the speed doesnt rise at the same speed it usually does. For example if i accelerate, still not too hard in say third, the revs will go quickly to about 2500rpm - 3000rpm but i will only still be doing about 50-60 (instead of just under 70 at 3000rpm like it should be doing). Then when i take my foot off the accelerator the revs drop suddenly back to normal. I dont know what could be causing this. Maybe something to do with the clutch? It makes me have to speed up really slowly (like not even depressing the accelerator 1/4 of the way!)

Your clutch is slipping most likely.
Time for a new one

:dancin: YAY! Just what i need! more things to get fixed on my car in a week or so when i am getting other things fixed. If it is the clutch and it needs a new one, could that possibly have anything to do with my crunchy 1-2 and 2-3 gear changes? Could that be the clutch?

Thats more to do with syncho's in your gearbox
Could be time to get a new one...or rebuild the current one

Damn! Hoping to maybe kill 2 birds with the one stone...oh well
Does anyone know how much it is to fix a gearbox with worn synchros? Just a rough idea so i can figure out if its worth it or not.

Well i havent been stupid in paddocks. lol My car has been crunching into 2nd gear exactly as it does now for about the last 8000 ish kms. (because i am poor  ) well, i dont let it crunch but you get the idea... I am going to get it fixed within the next 2 weeks.

When mine was cruching, changing the clutch did nothing. I had to get a new gearbox or reco my old one. So I got a new one.
Hopefully it's jsut the clutch

 I just wanted to know coz i need a new starter motor, possibly a new gearbox, possibly a new clutch and my noisy tappets fixed...and if its all going to cost too much and it doesnt seem worth it (considering the value of the car) then i may have to look for something else  i dont wanna have to do that though, rather stay with a car i know.

sounds like a worn clutch. if it is then the crunching is your gearboxes fault. if it has something to do with not disengaging completely then changing the clutch may fix the crunching. i think the reconditioned gearbox in my car cost the previous owner $600.

Take it for a run up a hill. Stay in third and put your foot to the floor.
If your revs shoot up and your speed stays the same (as what happened to me) then you're up for a new clutch. I had mine done for $700 ish at the local, whereas mitsu want around $900-$1000 according to members here.
Your gearbox crunching will most likely not have anything to do with the clutch. Mine crunched until I had the gearbox oil drained and replaced with a thinner, specialty gearbox oil for front wheel drive cars. Worked a treat. Graebox is still notchy but dosen't crunch.
Crunching is due to the synchros. I think I was quoted around $900 at one point, and my 'core' had to be sent away to be reconditioned/replaced with a new one or whatever. Too long ago to remember exactly.

Thankyou  That is what it does, probably the clutch then...well i havent tried putting my foot to the floor, but it does the same thing on a smaller scale when i put my foot down about half way. So i am going to need a new clutch.
