Ok now talking to a few friends of mine they think there is no difference between any of the petrol brands? I think there is a difference…. my brother and I both swore shell premium petrol was the best…. and after awhile we started having problems…brothers car surged at high speeds…and my car just misfired to hell…
So just wondering did anybody else have this problem with shells petrol…we’ve changed since (to BP 98 octane) and it’s basically fixed the problem…strange

was told or rumoured that shell's petrol was lousy. Again words from other people. I just pump the cheapest. Have tried Caltax, BP and Shell and woolsworths. Looks roughly the same. Heard BP Ultimate was one of the best.

There's hardly any difference. I've never had any problems with Optimax. Optimax is actually the full 98ron whereas BP's Ultimate is only 97. Optimax is a higher octane so you'll see better performance out of it in both horsepower and torque, but only if your car can appreciate the difference.

I have used all of the major brands, optimax, ultimate, and mobil's premium.
(Been using Mobil atm)

I cannot really tell much of a difference in the each, however I can feel a difference from the normal unleaded's.

I usually stick to one for a while and change, dunno just something out of habbit.

$1.18 still here in melbourne.

P.s Try Search'ing this topic Oil and Petrol make up alot of % of discussions.

ah no, take it from someone who used to be on the inside.
ultimate has better cleaning agents than optimax.

BP is 98. Optimax is 98. Optimax has higher detergents and other additives, in fact in Sydney, Mobil 8000 is optimax without the detergents I believe- it comes from the same vat at the same refinery - I'm just waiting on reconfirmation of that.

No, i'm not wrong. You've given me BP's website. They're obviously biased. Recently on Fifth Gear they did a test between regular unleaded, Ultimate and Optimax. This is how I know what I previously stated.

Ultimate may have better cleaning agents tho, but they're pretty much the same.

Well your accusing BP of false advertising, in breach of the Trade Practices Act.

What about Mobil 8000 - do you agree that's 98 RON?

Fifth gear - you mean the pommy motoring show?

Yes. The pommy motoring show. They make all sorts of claims on their websites.

You do realise that our fuel is different to the United Kingdom?

You do realise that the ACCC places heavy fines on corporations for false advertising?

You do realise that all other australian car forums accept that Ultimate is 98 RON?

If you reckon. Even so, the power gains out of Optimax are still far superior to Ultimate.

Well mate next time you fill up in Qld and you see a petrol tanker at the station, ask the bloke which refinery Optimax and Ultimate come from.

before u say anything more I advise to keep looking. Not that we are all up disagree here and there.

Fuelwatch.com.au :"Does any other service station other than BP sell 98 RON petrol?
BP is currently the only supplier that sells 98 RON fuel in Western Australia. Other companies market 98 RON products in the eastern states but do not offer them for sale in WA due to limited availability and the logistical difficulties in transporting product from their east coast refineries (BP refines its product locally at the Kwinana refinery). More detailed information on the topic is available from the web site of each oil company, which you can access from our 'Links' page."

Peace.

I am not making any arguements, but however it should be respected for everyone's opinions. Just because someone may have found out something from somewhere else does not mean that is always true. Reviews etc....they are all good info. Instead of just telling off someone that you are wrong, it would be a better way to just point out and say " I have heard from this review etc...." Therefore you do not offend the other thread member. We all make mistakes, all only human. Like I said before, I have heard people telling me Shell normal petrol was crap. but that doesnt mean I will have to believe it. I still pump Shell, BP, and whatever is cheap and good for me. There are ways to put news up without having to make arguements. I just saw that since someone had so strongly said that BP is not RON 98, I felt that it should be further researched before giving any confirmations. I am sure some people are royal to BP and would strongly disagree to that sentence. Likewise it would have been the same for someone who use Shell brand optimax or Caltex Voltex etc...

The petrol industry is not to deceive anyone who buy their premium grade of fuel and like said it would be false advertising and can be sued. So I dont think BP would be that dumb to cheat by 1 and say its a Ron97.

Secondly I have no peference of Fuel. As long as it doesnt crap out on me I will still pump it if its cheap. Hope this clears the matters of the BP Ron issue. I didnt think much of it anyway but since there was an arguement about it, I decided to show some offical proof of the product.

Again peace guys. please carry on with your recommendation of petrol, maybe instead should recommend what type of octane booster can be added for more perfomance as well.

Cheers!

I've used pretty much everything that's on the street, except of racing fuel or AV-Gas. I doubt there is a far superior difference between optimax and ultimate. They are both 98ron. Yes, they may have different additives i them at different amounts, but performance wise they are very very similar.

Speaking of which. Anyone tried the 100RON yet from shell? its not bad. I noticed better go from standing start and more responsiveness. :D

we should all stop using petrol, build our own ethanol still and run our cars off ethanol

then while were putting into our cars, we could be like "some for me, some for you"

dont mind me, lack of sleep is to blame

Wasn't there a group of WRX owners a while that did some test of Optimax and found that is wasn't always 98 RON??? Does anyone remember anything about this? Apparently they went to various Shell servos and found it to vary quite a bit between some of them. I know for a fact that Subaru only recommend BP Ultimate for REX's here is Aus.

Having said all of that, I only use Shell Optimax in my Magna though :D

Considering I go through about $25-$30 a day I look for the cheapest. Lately I have been putting ethonal blended petrol in the old girl and she seems fine with it. Saw it today on Grieves Pde Altona for $1.02. It's normally about 4-5 cents cheaper.

My Magna runs all day in CBD twaffic and on hot days with the AC running non-stop. I think thats a good enough test for this ethonal stuff.
