Has anyone got some of the 6.5" Jaycar Kevlar speakers up front in there Magna? If so, what are they like? I am only interested in the mid bass drivers, not the tweeters as i have replaced these with good ones already.

Any comments on the mid bass appreciated.

I think the new kevlar mid-basses have a big hole in their frequency response. Mind you, that is only to my ears, not checked on an RTA or anything. It is a subjective thing really. Still a good price speaker - top value.

What tweets you upgrade to? You said they were good... so why would you put a pair of cheap (although awesome value for money) mid-basses with it?

Remember that audio companies put alot of R&D into their crossover points of their matched mids and tweets and manufacture crossovers to suit. Buying splits should be done as a whole unit for most of us, not mixing & matching.... that is unless your name is Tim and you are a CAASQ state champion and know exactly what you are doing :D

The 6.5" woofers (CS2230... $70 each as not sold in pairs) sound very good. Heaps better than the kevlar splits. They have a mammoth magnet as well!!!

Yeaps a friend of mine who works for jaycar used these to make himself some bookshelf speakers, they go really really hard, they looks like a mini sub lol.

I've got the kevlar splits. I like em...good value for money entry level gear. A bit harsh on the treble side tho

I installed some JL spilts and didnt like the sound of the mid bass drivers. They lacked power handling and sounded more like a megaphone then mid bass. I bought them second hand cheap but the tweeters are great and i modified them to fit in the original sail area behind the original mount.

I have no problem replacing it all again however i have heard the Jaycar kevlar splits have crap tweeters with them.

So, are there any other suggestions? Focal, DD, Polk for around $200 - $300?

Not crap...they're just a bit harsh. If you could change the tweeters to something that was a bit more rounded/warm, they'd be a great combo. Look at Hertz too

the jaycar kevlar splits have been rated by MULTIPLE car auto competitions/magazines as being shyteloads better than any other split system on the market for up to $600 a pair. myself and many of my mates have them, love them. crappy tweeters? they are one of the only tweeters that use a silk cone, most use aluminium or ****ty plastic. silk gives the best frequency respose...

if they sound harsh on the trebble side, turn down the trebble settings :S

I have heard that as well... and believed them till I went and had a listen myself. My $350 Morels sound LOADS better than the Jaycar splits. Ive said 50 times and I'll say it again... they lack a big chunk of mid bass. Thats is from personally going and comparing them. True they are great value for money, but the woofer (CS2230), tweeter (CS2210) and tweeter x-over (CS2640) sounds MUCH MUCH MUCH better. That combination is one of the nicest Ive heard, and all for under $200!

It's not a matter of that. It's the tonal quality of the actual tweeter. I can't explain it in words well...it's one of those things when you hear it you understand.

Turning it down only then makes it muffled. I don't know how many of you here listen to the tone of speakers all day but thats part of my job so I tend to notice a bit more than the average listener. So what I hear most people probably wouldn't, so the issue with the tweeters is no big deal.

I've also never said they're bad ;) I wouldn't have them if they were

Oh also with the lacking of mid-bass, I agree to an extent. It also depends greatly on how they're installed into the car...they HAVE to be braced solidly (as does any speaker mind you) otherwise thats the first thing that goes.

I just put these kelvar splits in too. I rate them very well for the price, they could sound better, but my settings are all on high trebble, i get my bass through my subs, i do this so i can listen to music very loud. The tweeters sound harsh but i believe they sound like that becasue i mounted them right in my face - top of the doors.

oh well, i would like to listen to the difference with amped ones before i go and do it. Has anyone amped their front kelvars?

Yep mine are amped.

At the top of the doors isnt too bad so long as you point the passenger one to the driver and the driver's one to the passenger. Remembering that treble is very directional, so if you point the drivers one to the driver it'll tear their head off...so-to-speak lol
