View Full Version : TL VR stereo
I have just picked up a 2004 VR sedan and im a bit disapointed in the stereo.
None of it is great, but the rear speakers are complete ****e, so they are the top priority.
My first question is; functions aside, am i right in assuming that the CD player is alright? i figure that replacing the speakers will make it sound heaps better?
Also, has anyone found splits with a tweeter that can easily be mounted in the factory position. I am over putting effort into the install (been there done that). i just want to keep this car pretty original.
are the factory speakers 6.5" in the front and 6x9 in the rear.
Cheers guys. i hope thats not too much for one post.

first off, congrats on the new car, and welcome to the club, now if you take yourself down to jay-car you should be able to find the right tweeter to fit where the stock one is, (take a messurement first, the cover is easily removed) and also new speakers might not make it sound any better, as the system is designed to handle those speakers, e.g if u have crappy subs and a crappy amp, its works well, but if u have crappy subs and a great amp, things might not sound so great, (i have had both) good luck, but if i was to change the speakers i would change the H.U aswell. cheers :)

Stock unit is shiet
I wasnt happy with any of the stereo in mine, ripped out the deck, put my trusty old 9815 alpine in there, and the change was nothing nut spectucular. Front splits stopped crackling, and just sounded sooo much better. That said, the rear speakers are shocking, as with any magna, the splits in the door are ok, but they will go next year after I get the rest of the car sorted for motorvation.
Deck was pretty simple to install, much along the lines the 3rd gen installs (how to remove centre console) it all just uncliips. Just be careful of the bottom "draw", dont pull it from the outside, reach underneath and push it out from the back.
The subs I am installing today believe it or not, im just waiting for the shops to open to by some more 4 guage, and battery termianls. Inresting that the hole in the TJ to get the wire through the firewall isnt there in the TL, so im going to have to look a bit harder.
Stock size is 6 inch, getting a 6.5 is just a matter of doing a little adjustments in there. I had Alpine Type R split in the doors in my TJ, and the tweeters fitted nicely in the doors, in the stock location.
Have fun mate with your new car, have any probs come back, or PM me, more than happy to help.

Best Upgrade you can do is the Factory CD player..
The Factory CD player is Utter crap.. Only a Grandpa would be " Happy" with it.. Get rid of it pronto
It puts out around 7W Watts per channel or about 3W RMS..
You will be suprised at what the Stock Speakers can sound like when they have a decent signal behind them
The Fronts are 6inch on a weird Mounting Template so 6.5 inch will fit. Just watch for mounting Depth or they will hit the Window
The Rears are 6x8.8 inches ever so slightly smaller then a 6x9.. so Shallow mount 6x9's will fit.. Just watch the Tweeter Height as this can impede fitting the Stock covers back on.
Look at JVC, Clarion and Pioneer as your Options for a replacement CD player
A Speaker will only ever sound as good as the signal it recieves...
thanks guys, this stuff is all great.
i just went down to jb's and found a pretty decent HU with AUX input for my ipod. its nothing special but it will do everything i ever want it to.
also, i havent looked very hard yet, but is it a pretty simple job to get the doors off to mount speakers? same with parcel shelf?
has any one developed a rattle after pulling the console out?

nope dash should go back together without any probs. shouldnt squeak or anything. doors are just the same as any other door insatll, just pull the trim off, just watch out for the power window cpnnectors, but if you've done it before on another car, it should be a piece of cake
