I like the bodykit i recken it looks pretty.... (unsure if legit or not... anyone in sydney wanna do me a favour? lol... first to see all the options first)
Anyway.... just wondering if anyone Has got a bodykit for their car, and at what kinda price?
Links to websites would be nice... or names of companys that might be able to make a custom kit?
Cheers

I reckon Mitsubishi should have bought out a true "sporty" variant in the second generation. One with the V6 would have been wicked (I know there was the V6si, but on the grand scale of things and compared to it's daddy the Elante it was a joke)

Yeh,
i was kinda hopin they were gonna create the new 380 off the 2nd Gen..
ALAS not and it looks Sh*T
Mitsubishi should really look into a 2G shape with a V8 and rear wheel drive,,,
i know i would be in the line up to buy it!!! 4 sure!

Juts a question... (yes im aware i spelled it juts), you paint all your extra bits yourself?... or do you pay someone else to do it?... coz you said.... "i painted it"
because i wanna paint my car... but... alas... im unsure if my air compressor is big enough...(ive been told it hasnt...)
How big of an air compressor would u need to paint the whole damn thing black lol...
ive got one of thoes buffing machines... even if the black isnt as good as i hoped... couldnt hours of buffing and sanding and more hours of sanding then buffing again... get a decent result? please tell me how you did it!!!

Melv,

1. make sure you have a good spray gun.
2. you need a compressor with a decent tank. anything starting at around 200 dollars should do. as long as it can hold a reasonably constant pressure while running..
3. pick your paint, acrylic is cheap yet reasonable grade, 2pac is expensive, better grading than acrylic and well competition paint is just ridiculous at $800 a litre. you will probably need about 3 - 4 litres to do your whole car,
4. for best finish you should also get clear coat acrylic(if u have used acrylic paint) (2pac already has the clear mixed in)
5. make sure you get a decent primer and plenty of thinners.
6. lots of sand paper :P some 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 grades 4 - 5 sheets of each(since you are doing the whole car. (oh and lots of masking tape :) about 3 bucks for 50 metres from a local bunnings.)

ok thats the shopping done
now for the work....

ADZA27
05-12-2005, 12:22 PM
ok...
continuing on,,

1. rub down the car with some 1200 or 1500 paper with water. just to get the shine off the paint work. (your arms will be sore :P)
2.a/ dry it off and fill any holes with bog(if you need it) otherwise paint will bubble.
2.b/ sand off bog with heavier grade paper to get shape smooth, then 1200 to finish off nice and smooth.
2.c/ tape up all the bits you don't want painted :P ie windows and that. u will figure it out.
3. spray on your primer, 2 -3 coats with a 40/60 mix, 40 primer 60 thinners
4. let dry on a hot day for about 1 hour
5. now take 1500 with water and smooth down your primer, get rid of any tiny bumps from excess primer. should be really really smooth...
6. once dry, wipe off with cloth and start up with your paint, this again should be 40/60 mix
40 paint/ 60 thinners. 2- 3 coats making sure not to spray to thick.
7. let dry for 10 minutes and the blow on the clear with the same 40/60 mix again. 1 or 2 coats of clear should do..
let dry for an hour(hot day) off comes the masking tape....
be aware it won't be shiny at first.
leave for approximately 1 week to fully harden, then
attack it with 1500 with some soapy water,(really light)
then get at it with your cut and polish, i would say a medium grade maguires should do.
and you all done..
cheers

oh and i forgot to mention, that this is a weekend effort,
if you want a better finish take your time between primer and paint. maybe a week?
i did my panels in 2 days :P
oh and also check the law in your state about spraying paint outdoors, i know in NSW
its a $50,000 fine, if you don't have a proper garage to do it in,,
so it may be worth takin it 2 the local bodyshop..

Melvinator
05-12-2005, 11:59 PM
Ohh this would be alot more than a weekend effort.... im thinkin about 8 friends + parents + parents friends... lol
My car is Maroone... marone.... bleh cant spell... and i wanna paint it Black...
Wouldnt i have to get it down to metal then prime then paint? coz i want a Dark black gloss...

I wanna black Mafia style 2nd Gen Magna... That bodykit (close to $1000) Black tint windows ($360 professionally)... powder white coat Concept 9 rims ($1200 + brand new tyres)... :)... White center console ($14 spray can)... white dials ($235)... Diamante headlights($200-$300)... dark orange indicators (?!?!??)... *drools*.... ok im thinkin way to far ahead here... I dont believe i can achive this working at woolies... Donations welcome!!

Going to a bodyshop is... Rediculus price!! costs way to much for a country bumpkin like me to get a whole respray lol

Im lucky.... parents have 2 sheds.... 1 for mum and 1 for dad... 1 full of manly stuff.... the other full of unmentionables... both are sealed :) go teh foam stuff...

I Think the air compressor is worth more than 200... but i think my brother painted something using it.... (think he painted a mini bonnet)... and it came out Spotty... like speckles... shiny speckles... ill see if i can find some pics... mebe he just sucks at sand papering... and buffing.... *shrugz* i wanna have a go at it... but i dont wanna get my hopes up if hes right...

Anymore hints, tips or suggestions?

haha sounds like he didn't have the spray gun(elcheapo?) clean if he was getting spots, or his painting skills really SUCK!
but "Wouldnt i have to get it down to metal then prime then paint? coz i want a Dark black gloss..."
short answer NO.
long answer NO
you won't need to get down to metal, waste of time,
you just need to take off the gloss so the primer and paint sticks.. thats all.
the gloss will come from the clear, when you sand and buff it.

**here is a hint.
grab a bonnet off ebay for 50 bucks and have a go at that, keep rubbin it down and practicing till you are confident before you touch the car....
remember you also need to adjust the spray gun correctly.. if not, you will get runs and blotches...Also you need to spray in short bursts, you can't just hold it down and move it around LOL...
its hard to explain but you will catch on quick!

Im ready to touch the car... just not to harm the paint in anyway :doubt:

WHY in this day and age would ANYONE want a black car??

Black cars are usually at least 15-20c hotter in summer.

Its my personal belief that if you paint over existing paint you will only get a job that is as good as the old paint.

I have seen all too many times in my time within the paint and panel industry, poor preparation beneath the original (often factory) surface, and the new paint (thinners) seem to soften the old paint adhesion resulting in blisters, crazing, and paint often falling off.

Bare metal is my only option on expensive jobs ($1000 or more).
That said, If it is just an old car being tidied up, or a real cheapo job then it gets done over the existing paint where practical.

i have seen a number of respray jobs....(not going back to metal)
every single 1 of them is perfect.!!!

YaY go team!! lol... sifnt want a black car... id give anythin to have one... and the only way to get it is paying with $$$... and unfortunately thats the thing i dont have.... hence why i wanna respray myself...

I was 2 secs away from uploading the car i have atm, and the bad paintjobbie it has... (Even after spending 4 hours trying to wash and polish the damn thing) sept someone decided to lose the data cable...

Tinting is the next step for me anyway... if u want my opinion.... Every car gets damn hot no matter what colour... it also depends on your interior...if u have wool... ur gona get sweetty (i speak from experince... go the 120Y!!!) so it doesnt make a difference *Shrugz* black is just harder to keep clean

Hmmmm im re concidering the bodykit, i just realised... the side skirts remind me of the commodore bodykit, only slightly... ill put some thought into it... i like the front tho + rear wing

dont get me started on the lotto... my mate won 63k (finished with 43k after tax and sharing it out etc) in a business lotto ticket :doubt: was not impressed.... he bought a mitsu FTO... its like REEEE
