i'm not happy at the moment!
On friday nite the car was fine, not a problem with it. on saturday arvo i went to drive it and it was like it wasn't locking into gear. i would have to rev it to about 2.5k to get it to "lock". it was doing that for about 5mins and then went into protection mode(N was flashing). i limped it to misu in frankston where it now sits until they tell me whats wrong. what do you guys think is wrong? its a tj 01 sedan non tiptronic. also it is still within warrinty period so would mitsu fix it for nothing(or prehaps a small fee)?
thanks guys

Pretty sure it won't be under factory warranty (05-01=4 years......5/10 warranty didn't come til last year), unless it's covered by "Extended factory warranty" offered by some dealerships - I don't know what this warranty covers.
If it's under another 3rd party warranty that most used car yards try to sell ya......... well lets just say - I don't think those warranties are worth the paper they're written on. You might find it will cover transmission failure up to the value of $1000 if you're lucky.

shes done 120k. i don't thrash it around, but there is the odd occation that i get that urge to put the foot down..... would the fact that it has been parked on a hill have anything to do with it? i can't see that it would as it has been parked like that for about the last 2 months(new girlfriend has a steap driveway). i always have the handbrake on when parked as to not add extra strain on the trany.

I've gotten into the habit of leaving mine in neutral and pulling the handbrake on as hard as I can when I park on a hill. The reason: The handbrake (in my car at least) seems to have a bit of give in it, ie: after applying the handbrake on an incline, the car will 'roll' ever so slightly. I've found that if you happen to be in P when this happens - it can be really hard to get the car out of park when you next get behind the wheel (similar to if you had just put it in park, and not put the handbrake on at all).
Don't know if this could cause the symptoms you are experiencing though.

Sounds odd, you say the car has only done 120K. No auto of this age and model should be having problems.
I wouldnt of taken it to mitsu, only an auto specific place.
Makes me wonder did you buy it from some one who didnt serviced it properly?
or have u owned it?

I had this same fault on my 2000 TJ Magna a couple of yearss back. My car was always looked after, and serviced correctly. It occurred at about 60,000kms and was covered under warranty. Wasn't the actual transmission, but the transmissions electronic control unit. Sounds similar to what happen to yours.
Goodluck.

My TJ changes up and down pretty fine around town, but I noticed lately on a long trip whilst overtaking that it shat itself changing from 3rd to 4th whilst under the hammer. There was about a second where it sounded like it couldnt quite get into 4th.
Also, the shifter can move freely from drive to neutral. Not good!
