I've recently bought a '96 TE Magna privately and quite cheaply. I knew it probably needed some work but I would like some idea before I take it in to get it fixed. It drives very quietly and smoothly until I have to put my foot down, especially when the car has to work hard like going up a hill. Under hard acceleration, it is very noisy and when I get out of the car, there's a slight burning smell from the engine. Otherwise, it works very well. Engine oil is light brown, all fluids levels okay, engine temperature okay, etc. I would appreciate any thoughts.

It's just a very noisy engine sound. I thought it was the muffler but I had a quick look and it appears to be okay. It was the associated burning smell that worried me.

Check that your exhaust manifold isn't cracked, or the gasket isn't.
