Today i decided to get some sound deadening and make some mdf mounts for my speakers.

'98 TF Magna
JVC KDS895
Phoenix Gold QX300.4
Phoenix Gold Octane R 6.5 splits
about 1.5 sheets of 18"x36" Dynamat Extreme on door skins (I purchased a trunk kit, it came with 4 sheets, used 1.5 sheets)
16mm mdf mounts painted with sound proof black stuff that's used on the bottom of 4wd's.

Links for what i've done are:

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5594/dsc042455tf.jpg

I'm guessing I didn't apply it properly? I cleaned everything with prepsol beforehand, ensured it was all clean. Took the paper backing off, stuck it on, and rolled it as hard as i could with a piece of PVC pipe.

High passed the amp to um...60ish Hz.

I did the passenger side door, and decided to play some music. I can't really hear a difference. It sounds pretty much identical to what it was like, before it was s/d'ed. STUPID investment :P

Any smart comments anybody?

Did you apply some to the inside of the door skin/trim ???

Was the trim on when you tested it?

PS : I'm about to do the same tommorow but with Roadkill and an acoustic tile. Better make a difference!

yes

i tested it with door trims on yes.

Speaker to baffle and baffle to door is also sealed up with a bead of silicon too. MDF panels on some service holes.

Shiite, i'm worried now.. I just spend a fortune on deadening stuff only to hear your verdict. Could it be that the speaker isn't the best?

SD on doors does make a difference, it should have by the looks of things. I'm doing my doors tomorrow.

You should now be able to turn up the volume without the doors rattling as much. Deadening wont add any midbass. Just allow you to hear more from the speakers and less 'noise' from the resonance and rattles.

Anyway good stuff!

Do your doors shut with a thud now?

It just annnoyed me how 'tinny' it sounded. It seems to have fixed it a little. Its a little more than just a thud. Its freaking heavy too lol.

This shows you how to do 3rd Gen doors properly... this is Tim's, it is THE BIBLE!
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24273
You can see in this one that Tim has said that you need to cover all the big service holes with MDF.

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27404

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26904
On the last post - You can see that the big gaping hole in the door towards the rear bottom side of it has been filled with the MDF. If you have just put the roadkill over it in your door, then it will probably sound bad due to the material flexing with the speaker cone. Tim can elaborate further.

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15316

I know Ralliart 410 was looking for these earlier.

EDIT: OOOH, and this one too... gives a clear indication: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22598

oh yeah, very similar....minus all the duct taping...but i used a thicker panel of mdf, and was dodgely cut out. The mdf panels are only being held on with the s/d. doesn't look as neat as tim's but mine has blingy dynamat words written over it

i'll do my driver's door again maybe weekend or next week..see how that goes.

eek, look at your wiring.. is there a possibility that you have wired one of the Speakers up incorrectly?
Maybe you have now created an Enclosure too small for the Woofers to work efficiently in ??

Wow what a useful post. It's just saved me over $300.

But too bad your sd didn't work out, you know your fuel costs will be slightly up now don't you?

Nah, you need to securely fasten that mdf (screws), and make it as solid as you can. Holding it on with the deadener isn't going to help. You have to stop all movement.

Also consider getting one of the cheapo 'mogul pattern' sound absorbing tiles from Jaycar (not the ones on the website... the ones in the printed catalog 2005 edition, cat No. AX-3694). You get a pair for $7. These do just fine... no need to spend more. Just whack one behind each mid-bass, use contact adhesive.

Best of luck eekingus spammius

oh no i'm going deaf lol.

I was looking at other threads....check out this picture

My doors aren't that clean. My door outer door skin (actual exterior door panel) was covered with a thick layer of black tar stuff. Reckon its s/d'ed already? Perhaps they did it when it was a cop car?

I will fiddle with it some more and see how i go.

What equipment are u running ralliart410? pics of ur handywork? :P

I was going to take some pics but it looks the same as Tim's so i didnt bother.

Materials.
Spray deadened the outer skin a while ago.
Added Jaycar deadening sheets to outer skin (entire area - 2 packs / door)
Added DynoXorb tiles behind each speaker (some space shuttle material!)
Filled all the service holes
Added Stinger Roadkill to outer skin (entire area)
Spray deadener on the back of the trims. (yes, it stinks)

Eclipse Headunit
Cadence US-6K splits, tweeters mounted on door trims
Jaycar 6.5" Kevlars at rear
Polk Momo 15" Subwoofer
Audiobahn 8002T Monoblock for Sub
Audiobahn 6004T 75W rms x 4 for Sub

The SD fixed the reasonant frequencies i was experiencing and now there is fantastic mid bass up front. A tap tap tap on the front doors gives a deep thud now, not a hollow one and closing the door gives a thud. Sweet!

Well you are supposed to clean it before laying down any sound deadening material. I never did the cleaning part but mine still works fine, though I never had a layer of black tar :P

Mine had the Tar crap, just get packing / gaffa tape and put it over it and peel off.. no mess!

Deadening made a huge difference in mine, but boston splits have more midbass then the PG's. lol

Maybe you just did it bad, bad bad bad.

Yeah, see it takes long enough just to apply the sound-deadening material, I don't have time to spend another 6 hours to clean the ****. :-)
