k i posted a thread like this a few months back about get a ticking noise when i start my car in the morning or when the engine is cool. alot of AMC members told me to flush the engine oil and get better grade oil so i did and im still getting tickin noise. it stops when the engine warms up or if i rev it for a couple of seconds which means the oil is lubricating watevers makin the tickin noise. so is there ne thing else i can do or try to stop that noise. its so loud and annoying. i have a 99 TH sedan.

cheers in advance
Ashneel

Well, im not sure if this could be it, but could it be your water-pump?

I had a ticking noise at start-up, and after I replaced my water-pump the noise went away...

Now im about to tackle the howling noises, (possibly my drive-belts) and hopefully my car will turn down in volume a few notches.....

It might be worth using a engine flush before you next change your oil, change your oil with something like Magnatec and then aqdding a lifter cleaner to your oil after you change it. My wifes astina had a similar problem which was sticking lifters which woud go if you reved the car to free them up and also when the oil warmed up and thinned out, it would also go. The flush and lifter cleaner fixed the problem every time.

ah will do but will this tickin do any damage??? coz i service my car every 5ks-10ks and i jus did mine 3 weeks ago so ye. oil i used was castrol magnatec. also iv heard theres this lubricant thing which u can pour into ur tank when u fill up and this sticks to sumting which may cause the ticking to stop. ne 1 know bout this???

how many k's has ur car done?, magnatec might be to thin,

i dont recommed that u use that stuff that u pour in ur tank, dont know what it is but is sounds like a temporary solution

I hope I'm not derailing the discussion.

My mazda's starting to tick and in a mazda forum, the guys told me not to worry as its quite normal for hydraulic tappets if the oil level is lower and cold. The solution suggested was to use a thinner oil grade 0W30 or 0W40 and to keep the oil at the right level.

Is there a contradiction in the advise I'd received - ie. older engines starts to tick, & conventional practice say older engines work better with heavier oil - say 20W50. so going lighter oil is the wrong thing to do?

thanks for taking out the trash hyper TF

ne ways i called mitsi an they said bring ur car in and we will have a look. and i asked how long will it take and they said a whole day i was like wat all u have to do is tell me what oil i can use to stop the noise. and then they said that could be a part is becoming lose and we will have to see wat it is. i told them it could be the hydro tappets so can u tell me wat to use to get rid of the noise and they wont tell me. they said its best if i bring it it. so i asked them hw much will it cost. and gues wat they quoted me. $280 for a days labour on seeing wat it is and a further $200-$300 to fix the problem. i was like WTF. so looks like ill be changing my oil and soon to see if it stops if ont ill jus leave it.

well on my galant (1989, 207000k's) it can chew a lil bit of oil, and i used 2 put the cheapest stuff in there if it was just gonna burn it, but for a lil while now i've used the Penzoil 20W70 i think it is (can get 60 or 70). its like $28 for 5L at supercheap...anyways can notice the diff in the car, and does say on the back its for performance cars, or for older cars using up oil, and i woulda thought its the way 2 go in ur case as well.

Put thicker oil in, as engines get older they need more protection and yours has 200000ks on it so it's getting old now.

ive only read the back page so i may have missed some things, however,

this isa forum, if i anyone has a problem they come here to find out the answer, were not all good with mechanics, further, who are you to bag somones ride, it may be a work in progress,or it could be like mine and left that way to make it look less appealing to theives. as far as the noise goes, ive heard a few theories about engine ticking in mitsubishies, they all do it, somthing to do with the oil filter if its not mitsubishi genuine im told, or its just a thing mitsi's do, nothing can be done, dont worry bout the "dealer" wtf do they know, go to a performance tuner or a desent machanic.

my recommendation would be either the Pennzoil 20W60 or 20W70, bloody thick oil, bout $28 per 5L at supercheap

but having thicker oil isnt bad for the car is it??? like wont the parts be moving slower coz the oil would be to thick???

Yes, internal resistance of the engine will increase and fuel economy will go down slightly.
