I have a problem with my TJ sports. The clutch is slipping. So I took it to the dealer to confirm. The test driver said that the clutch was on the way out and it could also be the gearbox.

So I back into the office and the service attendant had a chat to the test driver. After 5 minutes the service attendant ask for service record booklet then confirmed my warranty details on his pc. He went into another office probably to consult with a supervisor. After 15 minutes of waiting, he told me that he thinks it's not covered under warranty.

He started rambling on about how they would need to check if its under warranty by taking out the gearbox, redo the flywheel at my expense and gave me a quote of $1350.00. With the recent timing belt, EFI carbon clean. I starting to think that my car is made of gold and diamonds.

What do you guys think? Can I go to other Mitsu dealers? Is this particular being a tight arse? My experience with this dealer leads me to beleive that.

clutch is a hard one, it could have been badly driven causing it to frig up, or it could simply have been a dud pressure plate.

Tricky one allright.
Could be burnt due to poor adjustment, riding the clutch, drag racing (not that you'd eva do it :D ), weak pressure plate springs or just a dud plate. (and theres more)

You could try another dealer to see what they say, couldnt hurt. :D

You might also get another opinion outside of mitsu just for your own info, but dont let anyone else take it apart yet. You're probly gunna get vague answers though.

Thanks guys. I'll have a machanic friend of a friend have a look at it. Yeah dragging doesnt help. Well, not often. It's a beast (TJ sports) why not?

From experience can you or do people tend to go from dealership to dealearship. Can we as warranty owners do that?

I did go to another dealer once to get my radio code. My friggin dealer wanted to charge me $22. Got it done for free in 2 minutes at Penrith Mitsu. Now that's service!

standard magna clutches are ****e anyway. if they are going to charge $1350 to just look at it, you can get it replaced for that!! (H/D clutch is about $1000, fitting shouldn't be more than $350!)

Had the exact same problem with my Ralliart, they refused to replace the clutch.

I went out and had a heavy duty one fitted and haven't looked back!

Thanks Akko,

Ok, looks like I'll have to bite the bullet on this one. How much did you get your HD clutch and where if you don't mind? Anyone else with prices in Sydney?

Got mine done by Cypher Industries here in Perth.

They also but some Redline MT-90 oil in at the same time, made a huge difference!

Ok, I've taken the car to have the clutch replaced today :( I miss my baby already but it's going to come back all better. I hope.

Cost me $1075 (includes machining of the flywheel, replacement of clutch, transmission fluid and service fee) from Automasters in Mt. Druitt. I should get it back today or tomorrow morning. I will also be getting an analysis on the old clutch. I think the cause is wear and tear but we'll find out and if not I will be speaking to Mitsubishi again. I'll keep you guys informed. So far I've notice great customer service from Automasters.

i know this post is a little late as you have already done the clutch however, ive been quoted 350 for standard sort of clutch and 700 for h/d clutch from meek performance, out near parramatta, he specialises in mitsi's mainly engine conversions in gsr's anyhow he is a god at this stuff adn mitsi wanted 750 for normal mitsi clutch.

No worries Joshlamb, it's never too late to spread the knowledge.

Yeah, the clutch I'm getting installed is of Heavy Duty variety. Hehe, kinda need it with my TJ Sports. It really takes off, well it used too.

Depends upon the driver as to how long a clutch will last (unless its there are mechanical problems). Some people tend to ride the clutch alot, and wont see 50,000kms life out of one, whereas others can get 100,000kms+ from one.

Okay, I have my baby back, I missed her so.

Yes, I have gain the power back and yes I am taking easy this time around. I'm also assessing the way that I drive the gears.

The old clutch was gone. It was regular wear and tear. Clutches are like brakes. They will eventually need to be replaced.

Thanks for the support guys. Much appreciated.

My cars on 11x,xxx kms and still original clutch. It shudders a bit when cold, however since I got the mechanic to put Nulon slick shift (thinks its called that) in the box, its been alot better.
Doesnt crunch as much from first to second as well, and much smoother changes in the other gears.

Hidey ho everybody!!!

I noticed the other day whilst the wife was driving the car (TH Sports manual) that the clutch was slipping. Confirmed this by having her hit the gas @ 80k's in 4th up a slight incline & the revs went up then settled back. It's done just over 100k's. After reading this thread I now know it's up for a new clutch. Seems as tho there isn't any sort of adjustment that can be done, or is there? Any thoughts?

Cya!!!

I think once the clutch has gone, its gone!!!

Yeah, its how one drives it. If you drive it hard or use the clutch a lot you can expect it to go. They usually last around 80-100k with regular use. Thats what the service person said.

Get it replaced asap. It's so frustrating driving with a slipping clutch.
