there is a difference in ratios... not exactly related to the diff but the final ratio of the gearbox is better in a manual.

use this for example of ratios in gen1's: http://home.iprimus.com.au/pjmorris/magna%20Gen%20info.htm

diff is the same, but there are a few differences, not much though.

Diff ratios are given in x.xx:1 format, E.G. 2.76:1

As a general rule

The lower the first number the higher your top speed and better your fuel economy. Down side is slower pick up.

The higher the first number the faster the pick up and better it climb hills etc. Downside, worse economy lower top speed.

Be aware that any diff ratio change will require a change to the speedo drive unit.

As for the different ratios in 2nd gens, dunno. Anyone else got a manual, even the little glovebox 1 should have the info. :)

BCX7's link has the info you need under the 1st gen section in the 2nd gen section

Hope thats sum help

Depends what sort of driving you do, highway yes, higher rpm = more fuel usage. At 60-80kph you just slot it into 5th and the motor revs around the same it would have normaly in 4th

Final drive ratios from my website -
4 cylinder Manual: 3.411:1
4 cylinder carby automatic: 3.90:1
V6/4 cylinder EFI automatic: 3.958:1
V6 Manual: 3.437:1

Interesting that the manuals have a lower ratio.

Check the top gear ratio of each box as well, quite often the overall ratio is pretty much the same. :)
