View Full Version : complete wheel confusion
hi everyone
I have been looking at wheels lately for my V6 '95 light blue TS
http://home.iprimus.com.au/zebu/outside.jpg
I have read a lot of threads here and read a pdf at the RTA site and it seems that the largest i can legally go is 17" diameter and 7" width from the stock 15" and 6" though i have seen some conflicting reports and am a tad confused with this.
it also seems that the most suitable tyre (235/45 r17) wont fit on a 7" wheel and needs a 7.5" which would fall outside the guidelines
The thing that concerns me is that i dont want to screw my NRMA insurance by having somthing thats technically unroadworth in the event of an accident.
If somebody coulf tell me if I have either interpreted the rules correctly or gotten the complete wrong end of the stick I would appreciate it
ring the RTA and your insurance mob..... its the only way u'll get a proper answer.

^^^
i got 235's on my 17's and no drama so far (well previous owners had no dramas, they arnt on my car yet :P )
hope that helps
thanks, i went and talked to the NRMA today during my lunch break and they said they didnt care as long as it was cool with the RTA. I will wander down to the RTA tomorrow and find out for sure.
i just thought someone might have some insight to share, and that a couple of months of lurking was probably long enough :P
:lurk:

I'm with RACV and they wont insure rims that are wider than 7", which i believe is pretty standard for insurance companies (other than just cars).
I have looked into this at great depths.
235/45/17 wide tyres would be the closest rolling diameter to the factory tyres - so the speedo will be pretty accurate. However, I could only go 1 inch winder (7"), and the widest legal tyre to fit on a 7" rim is 225 (235 will fit, but it is not legal, even though a lot of tyre places fit these).
So the tyres I have are 225/50/17. This means the rolling diameter is sligthly different (the speedo is like 1% faster or something) - but that is still within legal specs.
So basically, if you can only go 7" rims, and you want to stay legal, you have to get 225/50/17 tyres.
Make sure the offset of the rims you get suits the Magna too.

thats very good info, Thanks!
are the 225/50/17s expensive?

Yep. Hardly many cars use this size, just a handful out there, including our Magna's.
That is why people fit 235's instead. Personally, I wouldn't do it.

hey Zebu,,
just outta curiosity, what is the paint code for your car?
is it LE?
cheers
:doubt: just my luck
i like the look of the "rjr lightning" at bob jane and they come in 15" so mabey thats the best way to go.
i guess the money i save can go towards the tint i plan to get as well.
hopefully working at a mitsu dealership will mean that i might be able to swing some trade prices on things as well :dancin:
thanks for all the help guys

Strange, i've got the same colour on the 2nd gen, its hardly rare!
If you're strapped for cash, instead of getting 15's you should opt up to 16's. Tyres are around $140 each opposed to $220+ for 225/50/17's.

just looking at the photo it looks like LE,
however i just want to check, because mine is definately not LE.
you would have to see the car to see what i mean,,
take LE then add a lot of grey, silver and violet and you have my colour!!!
its really weird!! not the standard LE on 2nd gens that i see driving around! mines way darker than them...

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi09_rev4.pdf <- This is the only "report" you should pay attention to.
It states 1" wider for FWD car (or 26mm actually) and front and rear wheel widths must be the same. So thats the legal/roadworth side of it.
Next step.
Ring the NRMA, ask them what THEIR policy is on wheel sizes.
Now without wanting to sound rude, don't ask on here because it's all just speculation. With regards to wheel sizes and legality you should be ringing the proper authorities to ensure you're information is accurate.
225/50/17 is the factory tyre size for the Magna's that came with 17" rims. Ralliart rims are 17x7, VRX rims are 17x7.
You can get some cheaper 225/50/17, but you have to make sure the load rating is enough for the Magna (load rating 94, I believe).
I have Falken Zien 225/50/17 with 94 load rating. They were about $190 each.

That was the pdf i mentioned that i had read in my inital post that i wanted to make sure i had read correctly (judgeing by the response here i have) though i will be double checking with them in person before i do anything. Also as i said i went to speak to the people at the local NRMA office and was informed they were unconcerned as long as it fell within RTA guidelines, which is just as well because the RTA seems restrictive enough :/
The paint code is LR according to the plate in the engine bay. In person it looks pretty much the same colour as every other light blue magna you see around.
Im off to bob jane during my lunch break today to ask about 225/50/17 tyres and what options i have in 16" rim/tyre combinations that dont throw my speedo too far out.
The reason i am being so particular with this is that the dealership i work in also sells/services Mercedes and some others and the last thing i need is to give my insurance company a way out if i get in an accident with someone bringing their $300,000 car in for a service
Edit: Typo

Looks good dude... they set the car off nicely, but don't scream "OMG LOOK AT ME!".
I'm shopping at the moment, and they're on a very short list of stuff I've found that I like...

Hey Zebu! I like the rims, but they would look so much better if it was lowered! ATM it looks like one of those old boxy BMW's that all had alloy rims and sat up really high!
