I love your style of thinking, I know exactly what you mean. I had the best stereo at school, some guy got a station wagon and said his was louder, everyone else disagreed but I gotta blow some cash on a new setup myself to beat him. This is how technology moves forward, two mates (or better yet, two large corporations) competing against one another. It's how the world works, except you and I are doing it on a smaller-scale.

Anyways, if you really wanna blow him away, the Solobarics are a good thumping loud subwoofer. They don't sound too bad either. I think 1 12" solobaric got a 150dB (keeping in mind the box, sound-deadening, tuning helped all that).

Edit: Also, if you really wanna shatter your mates and your windows, you could always save up another $2000 and get an Earthquake Sub-Zero 12" subwoofer, and an Earthquake PowerHouse amplifier to power it.

Whatever sub you go for, don’t underestimate the importance of the box. For SPL, focus more on a large custom ported box rather than pre-fab. Pre-fab boxes are more often built to sound good rather than go loud.

ive got the 12" solobaric there awesome subs i have it in a huge ported box made by kicker all up i payed $600 with the box and it pounds i got 139.8db out of the one sub thats in a sedan with out any sound deadingi rekon thats pretty good out of one sub. but other than that it has awesome and really clean bass you can hear the car from miles away.but yopu would have to run at least 800wrms through it tho.

I wouldn't even say pre-fab boxes are built to sound good. Every pre-fab box I've heard with a sub they usually sound pretty poor, both in terms of SQ and SPL. That's just my experience though.

I should make myself clearer on that point. There's generally 2 types of prefabs. There's the one's built by a separate company, which you buy separately and load your own sub in... and there's prefab boxes that come loaded from the sub manufacturer itself. These boxes are genarally engineered to sound good. Those other prefab boxes are just a "one size fits all" solution which doesn't always work well.

Also, most prefabs are sealed, which is much more forgiving in sound quality, rather than ported.

Ahh yes, the pre-fab boxes which are designed to suit the subwoofer. Yeah, that's half way there, if they were designed for the vehicle they'd be perfect. 2nd best option by all means though.

How are you exactly going to 'beat' him? Go to a proper SPL drag and test out SPL? Or just sit in a carpark and go 'mmyyeasss, that one sounds lounder' ? Use a meter to set things straight

As for the Solobaric L7...they're not too bad in terms of SPL. Chuck them in the right box, and they'll do pretty well actually.

DD is very well known....3512 will do nicely...or even 2515 (I have on)..it vibrates your boot quite loosely too. Give brahma, RE and earthquake a whirl too.

slightly off topic here.. but its still bout the boxes.. say i have a prefab box thats not ported in anyway.. should i drill holes in it to open it up a bit.. im a noob when it comes to audio stuff (well for the car anyway)

It depends on the model of your subs, how many subs there are in the box and how big the box is in volume.

You should be getting the TSP off JBL specific to your woofer and Constructing the enclosure using no less then 18mm MDF and Building it..

Never Drill holes in an Enclosure.. Air leaks Color the sound and make it sound like some one stepping on a Puffer fish constantly....other wise BAD!..

Ports are not just holes cut into the side of the Box, they are carefully tuned ports ensuring the front wave of the woofer is not cancelled out by the Back wave..
When carefully tuned they Double the output of some frequencies in their Tuned Bandwidth..

Ported enclosures are larger then sealed and are less forgiving to the Enclosure designing noob.. Carefull Calculation and Air Tight Solid Construction are essential for them to work efficiently.. Get it Wrong by only 5% and it will sound terrible.. Sealed Enclosures will allow you to get it wrong by 10% before any Noticable diffference.....

Dont even attempt to build a Bandpass Enclosure buy one, then have it tuned...

They offer discounts to AMC members, and therefore, that could possibly help cover the cost of interstate mailing. Give them a call next time they're open and ask, or send an email.

Actually, thats not too bad. They come in a big beefy box, with heaps of padded spongey/foam stuff...I got my sub posted from Victoria to Brisbane and it turned up perfect :)
Get insurance if u wanted....

Saying that though...you might want a place where u live to stock them so u can get a listen.
