View Full Version : Raising the seat height in the TJ

I'm about 5'10 and ever since I had the TJ I felt that the driving position was a bit on the low side. Then I read somewhere that when the TE was launched the car was criticised for not offering enough front headroom for people over 6 foot, so Mitsubishi re-jigged the front seats some time after the TE, lowering them to allow tall people to be better accommodated. Which would be fine if the car came with a good seat raising mechanism like a Commodore, but unfortunately Mitsu's seat raising knobs aren't quite in the same league for effectiveness.
So anyway, shortly after I got my car I pulled the seats and fitted some washers to raise the overall seat height, and I must say that the overall sense of being 'at one' with the car was dramatically improved. Since I recently changed my seats and therefore had to repeat the process, I took some pix and made a quick how-to guide up, which you can download here:
http://users.tpg.com.au/adslugs7/GUIDES/TJ_Seat_Raise.pdf
So there you are - if you're average or below average height and are getting a bit tired of the Low-Rider approach, this may be something you can try.
Enjoy!

Hmm, this actually gives me a crazy idea for the passenger-side front seat. I was thinking I could dip it on an angle so that there seat leans all the way back. Good mod for those who are tall though!

Good idea if you want to sleep in the car whilst stationary, but an extremely bad idea to entice a passenger to do that whilst on the road. Recently learnt in a Defensive Driving course that you will highly likely strangulate yourself with the seatbelt when the pre-tensioners operates upon a high impact collision if you have the seat leaning back like that.
ok well rip out seats from a commadore and fit them into the magna see how it goes :gtfo:
There is absolutely nothing wrong doing that. I've been considering it myself, the Commodore seats (VT+) have much better support than ours too.

I wish my seats were lower. Im only 6" but my hair can brush the ceiling. I know someone who had electric seat bases for $70, maybe they could be adapted, they would be higher.

When I hop from my TJ AWD into my TF, it feels like I'm sitting on the FLOOR! Sux for sure. I'm 6'2" btw. I was wondering if it was where the diamante was grafted to the magna etc?

Could it be that you feel like your sitting lower in a magna because the door panels are so high and there isnt as much glass as most other cars...?

Have a 5 minute sit in the back seat and take note of your field of view, where your eyeline is in relation to the window line etc, then move the front seat. They've definitely lowered the front seats. Obviously if you prefer looking straight at the dash this mod isn't for you!

Nice how to guide - obviously put in quite a bit of work there! I must say I can feel a huge difference between the Magna and the Commodore when it comes to being able to see what's around you (better in Commodore).

No the guide is very good, Ive just gotta work out to make mine lower. It a bigger problem in the AWD due the the transmisson tunnel being wider and electric seats taking up room.

The FOV is still MILES better than the BA Falcon. That damn A-pillar is a Panel Beater's Money Tree! It's like a foot wide! The roof line is too low too! I've sat at a lot of lights (esp the ones on the cumberland hwy turning west onto the M4) and can't see the stuffing lights change! Got to lean forward with my chin on the steering wheel to see anything. Luckily the line of traffic behind me is quick to let me know when the right shade of green is on display :doubt:
