Ok, one thing I know about any car is that when smoke starts coming from the engine bay, its usually bad, and sometimes costly. Any advice on this would be greatly apreciated.
For about the last 3 weeks I have noticed a burning smell, (yes, i should have gotten it checked, but am a student. thats self explanatory :P) similar to burning rubber, when I get out of my car. it happens after long trips or short trips, just long enough to get the car to operating temp.
I got out of my car earlier tonight, and in the light from the headlights, i notice smoke coming from underneath the car on the passenger side. I have a 98 TF 3l V6, and all the drive belts are on the drivers side? I have no idea what could be causing this.
What worries me even more, is the fact that my auto has been really playing up this last week, especially on the change from 2nd to 3rd and am waiting for it to trip into safety mode. Could the 2 problems be related, since the gearbox is on the same side the smoke is coming from???
Thanks in advance :)

make sure you check that theres nothing resting on your motor esp the headers like any rubber/plasic pipes
your best bet is to run the car till u can smell is there then open the bonnet poke around and try and at least smell where its coming from also if theres smoke work out where thats coming from too

yes i have tha same idea
i was wondering if you havent done an exhaust manifold gasket being a v 6
or oil from the tappet cover driping on the pipes
you mentioned the auto ,,,, is it leaking oil from pipes or pan ?
wiring might be resting on something hot but surely a fuse would blow and you would think you would see burnt wiring (have a good look aroung before it gets hot )
looking under the bonnet when the smoke starts ..just remember to open it slowly .one large gush of air (did you see the movie backdraft )
Well, upon closer inspection, i have noticed smoke coming from the rear of the engine, it appears to be coming from the exhaust manifold, or from somewhere underneath the car, and just wafting up... I will be getting it checked sometime in the next week, or today if i can find an open mechanic or exhaust place.
Any other suggestions still welcome.

Yup sounds like you've got an oil leaking problem.

I had mitsu botch up a service on my car. . . . when they went to put the rocker cover back on the gasket got crushed. . .
when i was on the freeway oil was seaping out the top and leaking onto my exhaust causing it to burn. . . when i pulled up at the lights i honestly thought imy car was on fire with all that smoke pissing out when i opened my bonnet. . . . it was a big leak though . . . .
look to see that there are no leaks any were. .. . .. . .. .

   My mechanic is not going to know what hit him... I had my ex-mehcanic neighbour have a look, and sure enough, the rocker cover gasket I got fixed no more than 2 months ago is leaking... right onto the exhaust manifold... going back to the mechanic who fixed it on monday with a wonderful array of words...
Thanks for the assistance.
