Hey

My brakes have been grinding for quite some time now. It usually only happens when i have been driving the car for a while (1 hour + or during heavy braking). The brake pads are pretty new about 5,000km's ago so i know their not worn out.

anyone know why it's happening + a way to fix it

I've asked my mechanic 3 times now and he has never actually fixed it.

Thanks!

what kind of grinding sound? does it sound like a 'croaking' sound and you can induce it by releasing the brake pedal slightly? i think it's pretty normal... i have it too in my car. got squeaks too. tried brake cleaners but didn't help much. gets rid of it for awhile but it comes back soon after. even expensive cars like merc and bmw have it... so i reckon it's normal.

If it's a squeak as you brake then it's probably glazed over pads.

Just take them out and hit them with some sandpaper just to break up that glaze.

Could either be stones stuck in the brake pads or the anti-squeal shims are not installed properly? Otherwise try Killbilly's suggestion, which can happen if pads are not bedded in correctly. Failing that did you machine the discs before fitting new pads?

it's a metal on metal grinding sound... like a very loud scrapping.

The brakes also squeek really bad. It's starting to get damn annoying

Front brakes or rear ones?

It's definatly the front... i think mostly the front left, but i have heard it also coming from the RHS as well.

yeh i got the discs machined the same time as i got new pads. but the dude said they weren't that bad.

I'll take the pads off and de-glaze them, that will fix the squeaking, thanks Killbilly.

but this grinding just doesn't sound healthy.. it's so bad people turn and look at me on the street

if it worries you that much, you should take it a proper brake mechanic and have it looked at...

you don't want to find yourself cruising down the hwy @ 110kph and find out that your brakes don't work anymore...

dude, it's the ASTRON II engine right? I have it on my other car, TM GLX, it is manual, unlike the current TF. I still like driving the TM around, for fun, hand brake turns and 180s in the wet are so fun! heaps of grunt down low, yes it doesn't have much of a top speed but still damn fun taking on Autos, epshly pintara skylines of that age, it's fun! hehe... HEAPS of blue smoke though, but it's normal.

oh yeah, brake squeak, I had that before, but after changing new pads and file a bit of the edges off so you don't get shape squeak, it helps.

yeh go the astron II!

i took the TR in an unofficial drag against a VT commodore and a VP. Beat the VP and toe-to-toe with the VT. Quite suprising really

I want to dyno it to see how much i'm running at the wheels.
