I would really like to buy my stuff before christmas so that i can install it in my time off before christmas, but obviously i will wait if there is a bargain to be had

Boxing Day sales mate, if you can deal with the public, then you're going to enjoy some crazy deals below cost pretty much ;-) Every state will have places doing it, so just keep an eye out for them, and you'll be fine.

tip - GO WHEN IT OPENS.....if you go even a few hours later, just about everything will be gone, know what you want, so you can go in, grab what you need, and moonwalk out :P , if u go in there and oohhh and arrrr it'll be useless.
this is what i hope to do PROVIDING I DONT WORK THAT DAY!
i hope to get about 50% of everything!
hmmmm, this is all very interesting, but i will be out of town and not have any money anyway.
If i buy stuff now i will get it on interest free finance, but I wont get that on sale prices.

All the good **** will go on special/sale after xmsa, I can guarantee it, if not then, then just wait for next year before the end of financial year (july), and thats when BIG sales come. Excess stock almost falls off the back of the truck. Seriously mate, sales around xmas time and end of financial year is when all the big stuff happens. I've been around my fair share of car audio places, and a few have offered me $300 RRP subwoofers at around $150 because of excess stock on financial year (cough jb hifi cough).

Yep, usually startng Boxing Day, but this year the sales may actually start on the 27th.
The hot places to go are JB HiFi, Strathfield Car Radios, Autobarn etc etc. You local quality car audio place will more than likely have some specials on too.
On certain 'loss leader' items you can expect 50% off. A loss leader is something to get you in the door in order to get you buying it and other items - and these other items are only 10-15% off and in some cases not marked down at all. One national retailer seems to do this with cheap Chinese subs of zero quality for $29.....
Remember that these sales are designed to get you into the door and ready to buy. The salespeople will not get the usual commission on the 50% off items, so they will steer you to stuff that is not on sale.
You can expect to see these sales advertised in the Major Metro newspapers (in your case, the Advertiser).
I picked up 2x JBL GT4-12's last year for $30 off regular price (paid $150 each, were $180). Sony 12" red pentagonal subs were $139, and they also had an MTX model at a similar price.
I would expect to see Pioneer TSW-306C's at $99 each, possibly lower. JBL GT4-12's are currently $119 at Strathfield, expect them to be $70 each (superceded). The GT1202D's will be selling at $120 - what the superceded model was selling at prior to the sale.
Don't expect too much marking down on amps. They will mark down selected models, maybe one 2x100WRMS model and 1 model that is 4x50WRMS, and possbily a 300W monoblock. Of course, the one you really want (2x150W or 4x100W or 1x600W) will only have $10 knocked off it instead of 35-50% off.
So yeah, there are bargains to be had, get in early and grab them. Just know what you want, and don't let the salespeople 'up-sell' you to a higher model with less discount (more profit for the store and higher commission for the salesperson)
well... the last two posts, by mistimonster and ICUH8N have convinced me not to feel so bad about missing these sales.
firstly because the gear i am looking at isnt really in places like JB's and strathfield. nd 30 or 40 buck isnt enoi=ugh to make me rush into stuff any way. I will just get my splits now and maybe some 6x9's and then go and get an amp and sub come stocktake at tax time next year.

Oh, I've just seen on the Strathfield Website that my JBL GT4-12's are down to $88 each!!
Wonder what they will be after Xmas.....
Just for your interest:
JBL GT4-12's = $88ea
Pioneer TSW-306C = $119ea
Sony XSL1220 = $74 ea (I used to have one and it was crap, wouldn't pay $40 each for these)
MTX RT1204 = $179
Kenwood KFCW3009 = $199 (are they crazy?? The JBL is much better than this at LESS than half price)

Mate, agreed. Most of the sales are usually only on your low and mid-range gear, if you want quality gear, you're not really going to get much of a sale on it. But remember, the quality gear is barely marked up because you don't get it from shops that have employees workin for comission. Your local car audio enthusiast places, fitters and what-not will have specials on there good gear, but it won't be a huge mark down simply because they can't mark it down too much or they'll lose money.
