Hi, my TR MAGNA auto is in limp mode (ie stuck in 2nd gear). We suspect the AUTO Transmission ECU. Gregorys book says it should be under tha centre console. WE CANNOT find it!
Do ALL TR's have a seperate TRANSMISSION ECU? If so, where is it????
Thanks in advance .... x202brat

i had thsi prob but mine was in 3rd gear.
the ECU is behind the stereo take that out and u'll see it. silvery box with 2 plugs in it. i think it was up hig so look up when you take out the stereo deck.
pay a visit to a wrecker and get a used ECU from another TR just make sure the codes match up. thats the cheapest way to fix it shud be about $150-$250.
dont go for a rebuild or reprogrammed ECU too expensive.

Hello x202brat,
From the states, the Diamantes have the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) under the the dash in the center of the car. They stuck in a mouse hole to say the least ! The information is for a 1st generation Diamante (1992).
First I would pull any fault codes from the tcu before removal. Just may be something different / wrong witht the tranny.
Here's information (http://www.diamanteowners.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=64648) on how to pull the fault codes on a first gen D.
You can go here (http://www.diamanteowners.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=62534&st=0) and find the location and how to remove - photos included.
Hope this helps

Thankyou TG! I have now found the TCU and removed it. Youre correct, it IS in a mouse hole! Your help is much appreciated indeed. All that I need to do now is either have it repaired or buy a reconditioned one. I wonder where I'll find one?

I have just been quoted $1500 for a new TR Magna TCU .... a tad out of my desired price range!! I'm in Queensland, and I'd like to know if anyone up here tests and repairs these units? Or, does anyone stock second hand working ones?

ring around wreckers in your area. or just buy a cheep TR and use the TCU from that.

Hey, look up EMF i think theyre connected to metro ford in bris, they have exchange units with upgraded capacitors, so in theory the problem should never arise again as the damage is done to the circuit board by overheated/leaking capacitors, i got one for my TR a year ago , it cost me $400 trade price, tell them Mick from the neumanns servo on Bribie sent you and they might do you a good deal..... worth a try!!! don't piss around with second hand ones, 'coz u might be doing it all again in a couple of months, hope this helps.....
