can anyone tell me why my car takes ages to start?
i dont know if it has anything to do with it but my front speakers died for some onknown reason the other night and ever since then it takes ages to start my car.
i turn the key and it takes twice aslong to start, sometimes it wont start first go and i have to turn the key off and start again, the second go always works quickly.
like wtf its a 2003 tj vrx ffs... lame

unusual for such a new fuel injected vehicle. i can only come up with:
1. fuel pump issues
because turning off and on again could have given the pump a boot. else it could be
2. blocked injectors - but if it runs fine once started and no flat spots this is unlikely..... ?
3. blocked fuel filter - as above
some more knowledgeable others here may have other possibilities. good luck.

cheers mate
runs perfect once going, no flat spots, revs sit in the right places at speed and on idle....

Wouldn't be the starter motor going would it? Check for corrosion on the battery terminals as well and make sure they are making good contact with the battery...

How old is that battery because the mitsubishi ones are absolute crap. Does it catch then stall? If you have access to another battery try it.

i would bet its the "Key reader" basically a coil of wire behind the kep slot......... somewhere in the coil the wire is probably broken or fraying,
this happened to me, i thought it was a fuel pump but found out it was the ket reader, dont worry its only like a $30 part easy fix

just to clarify,
when i had the problem thisis what happened
mainly on hot days or after longer drives it would start run for a second and turn its self off.... sometimes it would even roll over ..... few minutes later or even the next try it worked again .
dosnt happen all the time but enough t0 be anoying.
worth time was when i was on a cruise we were at a meet spot, we got in our cars and mine didnt work, got RAA out said it was the fuel pump starting the engine of fuel.... i had to get a tow to my work. work looked at it and knew what it was straight away. apparently its a relatively common thing for magnas for this part to be faulty

ok guys cheers.
it happens wen the car has been sitting turned off for about 30mins or so. if i turn it off and then start it straight away its fine, starts straight away. if it sits there for more then 20 - 30 mins it just sits there trying to crank over for ages and then eventually does.
its the mitsubishi battery still, as someone mentioned, maybe thats the problem too? i might have to get it looked at sometime. damnit christmas is my busiest time at work. ill try a diff battery if i can first and see how that goes!
cheers ppl

i spoke to a mitsu place and they said it could be my bettery, they said the battery is very crucial in starting it up. so maybe thats the problem.
is there anyway i can tell if my battery is stuffed? (apart from going and buying a new one)
i have it booked in on wednesday but i wanna try see if its the battery first to save the hassle of getting it dropped off and looked at :)

Yes, the battery is EXTREMELY crucial in starting your vehicle up.

I'm not sure if you can find out if it's stuffed or not with any tests, but you could always try charging it up (could just be flat). If not then I suggest you get another mates to bring his vehicle over, put his working battery in your car, if it all works fine, then go out and buy a new battery. OPTIMA YELLOW-TOP! :D

maybe it has a stuffed cell. i guess ill try a mates aswell.

So is there anyway to diagnose this for sure? As usual mitsubishi dealership just pointed at the battery and said youll need a new one. Basically on occassion mine will start and immediately stall. This happens once or twice then turn on and off and i starts fine. It happens pretty randomly which is why I thought it wasnt the battery.

My cars doing this also got it hooked up to a computer and apperently was getting errors for the immobilisor. Soooo im thinking it may be this coil behing the key slot can anyone shed any more light on this? and would it still be in a 96 TE or only in the ralliart. Im stumpped on this one and its so annoying cause i like driving my car

my verada did this sort of. it would only start sometimes and would take a while to start. my immobiliser wires wer stuffed and i had to get new plug bit cos it was corroded. fixed it straight away. BUT its diff in my vrx, it always starts, just has trouble doing it

You must have a sharp shovel to mine a thread this deep.

I like thread mining (by others)! It shows the server has a really good memory!
It would be nice if ppl who pose questions come on with a solution though, even if it is "Nah, I torched the car!" lol

sounds to me could be rather electrical issue, spark plug/leads, or dirty injectors, as with who ever said it was a fuel problem to you, well, not too sure, as when you turn the car off, it should not let fuel in. if it does, than most likely dirty injectors which could mean letting in fuel, lack of fuel could be computer, might not be getting enough spark, when where they last cleaned ore replaced etc....have you tried pumping the accelorator once before actually starting? does it help or not, and does it blow any smoke when it does start ?
