Hi,
I got a gregory and haynes repair manual. The gregory manual says for checking tranny fluid level, get the engine to operating temperature, cycle through all positions on the gear controls and set to neutral and check fluid level whilst the engine is on, haynes says to do the same but leave it in park. Yet when i do this the fluid level is off the scale but if i leave in park and shut the engine off (hot) it seems to give a logical reading. Am I just doing something wrong here? The car in question is a 91/Nov TR EFI magna, automatic transmission of course.

Thanks,
Rauli

To whom it may concern -
To check automatic transmission fluid levels on a TR magna. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature (e.g. go for a 10 minute drive). Park on a level surface. Set the gear selector to Park then cycle down through each range remaining in each selection for 5 seconds at least, down to L1 and back up to Neutral and leave it there. Set the hand brake. Check tranny fluid level now. If you need to add more fluid be sure to repeat the Park to L1 to Neutral cycle again before rereading the fluid level. Do not exceed the maximum line in the Hot range as you get foaming, loss in performance and possible transmission damage.

If you get random stumbling or force feedback when cruising at 60Kph and rpms are 2000 (overdrive off) or at highway speeds at 100kph (overdrive on) especially if you are going up a slight incline you either have too much or too little tranny fluid. This is coming from my experience. And yeah, if you get someone else to service your tranny be sure to check the level yourself afterwards as Mitsu when they flushed my TR magna put 2 litres too much. Like they say, want something done properly do it yourself and in this example save 80 dollars.

P.S. Thanks to Jellico for getting us the official mitusbishi service manual .pdf file. :bowrofl:

Thanks,
Rauli

Forgot to mention to keep the engine running when checking the tranny fluid this way.
