Hey all,
What does everyone think of using the new 100 octane Shell Optimax in Magna's?
I have just put a tank of it in (2000 TJ Magna), and engine does seem more more responsive, and idle quality is smoother. Anyone else tried it and noticed a difference?
Only concern I have is the use of ethanol in it. I know its only 5%, bu ethanol does sought of have a bad rep in regards to damage to engine parts. I have looked at the shell site, and it seems that 5% is ok for Magna's, but does anyone with a mechanical background have an opinion on this?
Seems the use of ethanol has kept the price down as it was only 2 cents a litre dearer then normal optimax. Interesting.

i've used extreme for a while now. 2 weeks or there abouts. I noticed same thing. Better idle, quieter engine, more responsive during stop-go. and acceleration overall. If shell says that its ok for magna's then im happy with that. If it would damage the engine, why would they release it and put themselve's at risk of getting sued?

I've been using E10 blended fuel in my car for some time now. People need to get over this mis informed phobia of ethanol in fuel.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. From what I have read enthanol got a bad rep back in the early days when certain service stations were putting in 20% and not telling anyone! Sure its fine now with newer cars etc.
Drove the car for a while tonight, and DEFINATELY smoother and more responsive, and the engine is quieter!!!!! My TJ has always had a rough idle (like most) and this seems to have smoothed it out alot. Definately seems like an even bigger improvement then moving from regular ULP to normal Optimax 98. Will be interesting to see what economy is like with it, as I seem to get about 40-80 more kays a tank out of normal Optimax 98.
Recommend everyone gives it a try atleast.

Does WA have E10 yet?
Sure it would have E10 as its been around for a while. Its just regular unleaded with 10% ethanol. All the Shell Express service stations in the ACT now have the Optimax Extreme which is 100 octane 5% ethanol blend.
If you can get the extreme definately give it a try, surprised how much difference it has made!

up to 10% helps to keep the fuel system clean but it is somewhat corrosive so higher concentrations can be a problem. Most cars shouldnt have to much of a problem. :D
Tastes better too. lol
Sorry, couldnt resist.

i work for an unnamed oil company, and had a chemistry minor at uni - the only real value of E10 is the environmental value, because ethanol has about half the caloric energy value of petrol (energy produced on combustion), E10, while 4-5c cheaper than pure petrol, is also about 5% less efficient.
I'll bet you won't see that on any mainstream media channel or otherwise. :D

I used to work for a big waste company who buttered me up with a fuel card for my TF. Our closest convenient servo is a BOGAS servo which only carries ethanol blended fuel. Sure my car seemed to go ok, but I also ran a log book and every tank of ethanol blend went at least 50km LESS per tank than non blended fuels from the Caltex sites.
