View Full Version : jaycar amps
what do people think of the jaycar response amps?
I have decided to go with focal 165v2's for the front of the magna.
these are costing a fair bit more than i would have liked (particularly when i include all the SD) but they just sounded too good!.
i would like buy a four channel amp and a sub soon but would like to save as many dollars as i can (too offset the overspend on the comps). however, i dont want to spoil these great speakers on a crappy amp. i am looking at the 4x100w.
realistically, if the signal is a clear as my eclipse HU i will be happy. thats what they were run with in the shop and they sounded great.
I am interested in everybodys opinion but particularly in the opinions of the audiophiles amongst us (that means you stimulate).
cheers

Well, to put it bluntly, the Jaycar amplifiers are the best bang for ya buck amplifiers around. They're not brilliant in terms of quality, but they're good nonetheless. If you really want all-out high quality, then have a look at Audison amplifiers. You pay a little more (actually, a fair bit more) but it'd be a noticable difference.
As you said, you don't want to blow your budget too high, but you don't want your sound to suffer so I'd say go with a Jaycar amplifier.

Exactly what I would have said.
Matthius - ohh and an audison with similar power outputs would probably be around 4 times the cost :P
i run a response amp on my splits,
never had a problem with it ever. its just a 2 channel one, gets nice n loud and sound quality is still good :D

I run the 2x150W on my Morels, and am very happy with them! Have got another to run my sub when I get around to making the box!
If your on a budget, I would say definatly go for it.

Hmmm dont think so dude,
Response 2x 80WRMS amp is under $169
Audison SRx2 2x 65WRMS $285
Response 4x 50WRMS $199
Response 4x 100WRMS $299
Audison SRx4 4x 65WRMS $487
Response 2x 150WRMS $249
Audison SRx2s 2x 180WRMS $570
Shall I continue with Damping factor, S/N, THD etc and then you will see how far appart they really are. A little extra money goes a long way. 1 example 2 amps I have had, the 2x 150WRMS ( old version which is now my brothers ) and now my SRx2s. Both amps where running a sub.
Response amp did it ok, with a damping factor of only 136 it really struggled to control the 12incher. THD was ok though at only 0.07%. S/N ratio was rough at >80db and there was 70db of channel separation not that it mattered in bridged mode. The amp pulled 56A to make its 450WRMSx 1 @14.4V
Then I bought the SRx2s, damping of over 280, S/N of 95db and THD of 0.03% the money was worth it. The bass was very real and made it sound warm. It is a true powerhouse giving out 2x 135WRMS @ 12V and 2x 180WRMS @ 13.8V but even more impressive is the huge 600WRMSx 1 @13.8V when bridged and the amp only pulls 35A max. I have the SRx2 and the above SRx2s and together they pull a max 50A draw for around 750WRMS @ 13.8V. Added bonus is how small they are. :D

Of course Charisma, but $200 adds up :) $200 could be spent better upfront with sound-deadening, and then if he wants to later he can upgrade the amplifier. Sound Deadening should be done immediately in my opinion, the amount of difference it makes is unbelievable.

I was exaggerating, but they're still double the price and thats for a budget audison. My point was Response amps and Audison amps aren't in the same league, price or performance.

does damping factor matter with smaller speakers? i was wondering since it is a much smaller cone to control.
does anyone know what the daminf factor of the current response amps is?
because the SNR is >90 now
the other major question i have is this
how do all these stats compare with the amp on my eclipse head unit?
Because this is the only alternative right now. If i dont get a jaycar amp i cant afford anything else.
i know a lot of you will say "dont get anything now, wait and save for something better"
but if i wait i wont get one until i get a sub (i will get a 4 channel).
and 400 - 500 for the amp + 200 or so for the sub might just add up to to much at the time and the whole thing may never happen

Its like anything you get what you pay for. The only Audison that is double the price is the SRx2s compared to the 2x 150WRMS. For $570 amps dont usually come with more features. There is no bass boost dial... that is a big bonus!!! It also has adjustable HP / LP @ 12 / 24db octaves, Adjustable "Q" on HP, Input / output RCA's so you can run 2 or more linked, Remote sub control, Sexy heatsink design, and a crap load more clean power. I have seen people use these in there front stage with Boston Pro60's and do very very well in SQ comps.
But saying that, $250 for 500WRMS is a cheap way to get a lot of power. Dont expect it to sound the best but it will be enough power to run most subwoofers. :D
