It has come to a Crunch
It is Down to Two Subs...
1. Pioneer TSW306c's Seen Here...http://www.pioneer.com.au/car_entertainment/subwoofers/tsw306c/index.html
2. The New JBL 1202D's
http://www.jbl.com/car/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=GTO1202D&cat=SUB&ser=GTS
Bare in Mind , He is Going for a Ported Enclosure...
AND SPL is his Major Concern....NOT SQ.. he wants Boom not Squeek..
Both Subs are around ther same Price...
The JBL's are Dual Voice Coil..
A Jaycar Monoblock looks like to Be the Amp to power them at this Stage...
1. He is Making a Choice out of the Two Above subs,... No others
2. 1. Amp will be used, You can suggest an Alternative Amp but keep in mind the Budget is narrow..
3. Suggesting Other subs will not help..
4. Positive advice is appreciated and if you can Highlight the Negative of either sub, that would be Helpful..

Pioneer gets my vote.

interesting, may i ask why?

I just feel that if you're after SPL, you'll be able to push these subs a little harder than the JBL sub.
MRMGNA

U know why i voted for JBL.
[TUFFTR]
14-12-2005, 09:26 PM

I know this is slightly offtopic to what we're discussing, but as the box being ported, have you calculated everything (box size, port sizes etc..) and all that for both type of subs to see which will come off better?

JBL have More wiring options, Better Construction and Long throw Capability also SOund Unreal in Ported enclosures as recommended by JBL
Pioneer recommend Sealed...but can go in ported..

Yeah, yeah, that's all cool and all but has the box size and port sizes been determined and all that. I dunno if you got this program, "BassBox Pro" but I suggest you get a copy and have a look at it. You'll be able to work out so much crap on it to help produce the best sound (and loudest) before even purchasing.

no mate, havent done that yet, just really want to know, in an experts eyes, what sub, ported or sealed, would be the louder out of them both
edit, will now try and get that program :)

ported will definately be louder. I personally feel the Pioneer will go louder, but I could be wrong. Everyone else seems to be voting with the JBL so I think I know what you'll end up purchasing :-)

i was actually leaning towards the Pioneers purely (as a noob like me would do) on the higher RMS, all the technical stuff just for some reason doesnt click, thats why im after the experts opinions first

Those Pioneer dont get very loud at all and recommended for really only sealed boxes mean that the JBL gets my vote. Apparently the Pioneers are a very good sounding woofer compared to what they have brought out lately but you would really need to get the 1200W SPL thing ( next one up ) to get loud.
Those JBL's go crazy in ported boxes which they suit very well. There effiency is already higher than the Pioneer and sky rockets when placed in a genorous sized ported box ( somewhere around 4cuft for both ) :D

Ported enclosures usually give a 3db increase in output then it's sealed counterparts. Now considering the sensitivity on the JBL is 93dB as opposed to the Pioneer's 89dB and if your were seeking SPL i know which one i would pick!

You all know what I voted for so I won't even say it. If you don't... let your eyes wander left. lol
Dual voice coils for more wiring options (including a second jaycar monoblock later, with 1 amp per sub & 2 ohm load when paralleled), higher sensitivity, and the fact that every Tom Dick and harry has Pioneer (or Kenwood for that matter), The pioneer needs a bigger sealed box (and bigger ported too IIRC - how much boot space you wanna lose?).
Also... I don't see pioneer making much high end speaker equipment anymore. JBL are still making and innovating in PA and Theatre sound, they have one of the best Line arrays in the business.....Oh, and JBL = Harmon Kardon. Yep... high end quality stuff. It all filters down the line to these subs. Possibly the most under-rated brand in car audio in the value end of the market.
At the same price, the JBL is the only way to go. Pioneers would have to be $20-25 cheaper for me to consider if contsrained by budget.
If anyone else can point me to a 12" sub with 4ohm DVCs that will comfortably handle 350WRMS (they are under rated by at least 25% on RMS.... I've forced mine to about 400WRMS) clean signal and it almost sounds like they want more, then that is the sub you should buy. The GT4's will take 1000WRMS peaks (but not for long obviously) so I'd imagine the DVC could too.
BTW, JBL 'under rates' their power due to company policies on PA gear. A 12" PA cabinet with horn may take 550WRMS comfortably, but they rate it at 400WRMS for places where it is installed (like nighclubs, concert halls etc).

and the fact that every Tom Dick and harry has Pioneer
..yeah but every Tom Dick and Harry have JBL too, so it doesn't really matter about what other people have as that's completely irrelevant.
MitsiMonsta
15-12-2005, 07:11 PM
Now way every tom dick and harry has JBL.. Maybe the odd David and Joel..... :bowrofl:
Seriously, if you wanna be different and impress some mates after their "Nah man, JBL suck, you bought crappy subs" routine, then these will do it for you. And when you tell them that they are the same price as the pioneers, watch them buy them afterwards.
Already converted one mate to them, he's trying to blow his 2 YO pioneers to get the 1202D's so he can beat me!
JBL are gaining in popularity, but are still way behind in market share compared to Sony, Pioneer, Clarion, Kenwood.
The GT4-12 in a factory ported enclosure for $199 is very popular. But once you start saying 6x9's or splits, all you hear is Pioneer from most people. Heck, I have Pioneer Coaxials & 6x9's too!
So gotta take the time to install my splits

He's trying to blow his pioneers to buy JBL? Why don't you tell him to blow his pioneers to buy 2 Earthquake Sub-Zeros, or some Kicker subs and blow your glass windows? :P

15-12-2005, 08:00 PM
Nah... he doesn't want to spend a fortune. His subs were secondhand anyway. I think the voice coils have been protesting a bit lately.
We are both budget runners, But I think I will be moving up in the next 12-18 months.... Boston G5s

JBL Make Awesome Gear ..
Pioneer make Average gear across the Board... High End and Low end..
Look at the R&D
Pioneer Make Headunits, DVD Players, Screens, Amps Speakers and subs..They have to spread funding to so many areas..
JBL make Amps and Subs.... Thats All... No TV Screens no DVD Players...they have alot more money to spend on R&D in these area's...
Harmon Kardon are the Parent Company and anyone who says Harmon Kardon are crap and sound Bad needs to have their Ears washed out and thier Heads Examined...
They are also responsible for Infinity car audio aswell *
JBL have always made good gear but they have always been Middle stream...Stuck Between the likes of High End like Focal and Hertz but rated above Clarion JVC and Kenwood...
I did a Full JBL Install in a 97 Holden Rodeo space Cab, GTO Splits, 3-way 6x9's and a 12 inch GTO3 Sub in a small sealed enclosure and it was the Hardest Hitting , Loudest and most Accurate system I have ever Built..
I didnt Charge the Owner for the Install but he Did Give me a HUGE Christmas Present...
He sold the Ute without the JBL System and Transferred it to his New Ride..
A VR SS Commodore and the Results were the same...
* At the Time of Posting Harmon Kardon were The Parent Company to Infinity and JBL..

Well......after much deliberation, with all the positive feedback....i think the winner is JBL here........clearly you think they will outperform the pioneer in every way......so looks like after xmas ill be heading down to *sigh* strathfeild and picking me up a pair.
thanks guys
now, who can compare something to the Infinity 6x9 Model 9613's but at a much cheaper price? :)

Ahh see I'm always stuck under the impression that JBL are below Clarion and JVC, Kenwood doesn't really deserve any mention at all.

I'd atually agree with Magnat.... higher than Clarion and JVC. Clarion speakers are great for the price, especially on special. JVC speakers I do not like.... those Warren G subs... WTF were they thinking. The Strobe subs were just a gimmick too.
Of course JBL speakers beat anything Sony or Kenwood.
They are great quality, good sounding and well engineered speakers for little money
