View Full Version : polk subs
I have heard a lot of guys mention that polk MOMO subs are over priced, but they dont seem all that expensive to me.
i am keen on a 10 or 12 inch sub (probably a 10) in a smallish box. the aim is SQ not SPL
what other subs should i listen too that cost similar or less that are going to sound as good?
cheers

Yeah, well I just purchased a Polk MM2124 DVC (Momo Series) subwoofer the other day, not yet installed but from all the calculations we've done in the ported box it should pound like crazy. Now, you want SQ and I've heard that the MM2124 sub isn't exactly an SQ sub but they sound reasonable nonetheless. I'm not sure why people said they were overpriced either, what price have you seen them for? (10" and 12")

I have the new Polk 15" Subwoofer and it goes hard. As for the 12" i could only think that this would go hard also. What about Alpine R series or Eclipse.

Ralliart 410, the new 15", is that just the Polk MM2154?

I said they were expensive.... in relation to other subs out there.
You could buy just as good a sub for less, or a better one for the same price.
Still a nice sub and they make good equipment, and a nice balance of SQ and SPL.
However you are paying the exhorborant licencing fees for the MOMO logo on it.

MitsiMonsta, what are the RRPs on these subs? I've asked over 100 people, telling me they're overpriced but not one has been able to even give me a close ball-park to what the actual price is. I'd like to know to see what kind of a deal I ended up getting.

Nice, nice. Good to see you're enjoying it, what box specs?

I'm using a sealed 2cu ft pre made enclosure. The specs indicate the optimum size is a 1.5cu ft (42.5litres) enclosure for which i am about to make and is ideal for retaining good boot space. The new one will slide all the way to back against the rear seat whereas the current one is a little too high and stops at the child anchor point mounting...

Nice, nice ;-)
I think the Polk momo 10" is anout $230. just wondering what other subs i should look at that are good for SQ and dont need too much power to drive them (for a similar price).
MitsiMonster i want to hear from you here, you said i could get as good for less or better for the same. so what are they?
cheers

Sorry guys was plying poker on PS... just won an 18-player $300 sit & go so I am cheering! 'Tis only play money though
I think the RRP on the 10" subs in question are more like $280 but I'd daresay that you could get them for $230-240. I can't find an official pricelist anywhere right now :doubt:
I'd prefer the Hertz ES250 or ES250D's to these. They RRP at $192ea.
You could get the Pheonix Gold Octane ZR10s for the $230 mark easily, possibly more like $210ea
You could go for a Boston GTR10 for $199ea RRP, so I'd imagine $180 or so at most places.
A Treo TSi 10.4 is only a few dollars more at $250ish.
Again, I am not saying they are bad drivers, they crap all over my JBLs. Just better value to be had IMHO.

And to you guys that have them, as long as they sound good to you, and you like them and the price you paid, the its all good. If they are below RRP or on special, they are decent value.
I'm certainly not dissing your choice. They are a very nice cone that makes a sounding and takes a pounding. Can look awesome in the right install. (white/red fibreglass full house install I saw once... one of my fave installs)
FATS>>> You say you are after SQ. I'd grab one of Tim's DD's if he hasn't sold the second one. It's good value at that price.
How much you got to spend? Full SQ system, or do you want to be able to get loud too? Do you want just one driver, or could you envisage two? Do you have amps already (if so, what are they)? What other speakers you running? This will give both myself and Tim (and Al & Magnat) something more to consider.
I've always liked dual 10's or a single 12. Vibe Blackair's are lovely speakers, a single 12" is about $420 though. Once you are talking that much, you must also consider a Image Dynamics IDQ12 v2.....
But yes, lots of choices.

Who cares what it looks like? Heh, I don't pay over $200 to look at a sub :P

For some people, the bling of the install is as imortant or even MORE important than the quality of the sound.
I know - it's crazy...
firstly, i will be getting one sub. i am happy to get a single 12 as long as i can get it in a smallish ported enclosure.
I am after SQ, dont really care if it goes loud. tp put my definition of loud in perspective. my old car has kenwood (point and laugh) 7x10' and entry level DLS splits running off of a pioneer HU. THat went loud enough for me. so i figure even the most SQ oriented system will be loud enough.
I am planning on probably running the sub off a 2x150 watt amp (or thereabouts) so i am not sure i really need the 600wrms power handling of tims subs. the other thing is that i am probably 2 months from purchasing the sub, so tims will probably be gone.
By the way, At this point the amp will probably be jaycar, but we will see.
Mitsi, you asked how much i have to spend. at this point it is undecided. It wont be alot, but i do want a system that is cleaner than all the fully sick doof doof wankers in their commodors. so i will spend what i need to.
I am getting focal 165V2's and an amp for the front stage this weekend. I am going to move the stock splits to the parcel shelf (and not worry bout the rears for a while). when this is all in i will sort out a sub and amp for the boot.

I paid under $300.00 for the 15" MM2154DVC. Then a tad extra for the geniune MOMO grill for it. It was on special though otherwise i would of bought something else.

I would go the Eclipse 12 inch 6.1234 ( Not sure on the Model Number)
It Goes Hard in Sealed and Ported enclosures has a really Clean sound (When fed Properly) and has a Great appearance and make the Polk Momo look Ugly...
I Swindled a Set for a Friend in a Dual 12 inch Sealed enclosure for $399...
So I am more then sure you could probably do Equal if not Better...
They Hit Hard when being Fed a Good Clean signal from a Boss 1000W Amp (Thats sound like a Contradiction) and it sounded Great... Nice and Smooth delivery..
More then enough to match the " Doof Doof" and enough to Handle the " Booom Booom"
