Lucky me managed to get my hand on some Series II TJ VRX wheels + tyres (cheers EGO) and well, pics ahoy! I like 'em a lot, yessir. Took the towbar off while I was at it too. The car won't be lowered as I have a dirt road with dish drains and savage gutters at the local supermarket. Plus the roads around here aren't the best, even if they are sealed.
Surprising what a good set 'o mags will do for the look of these cars. Ans I *love* the wide tyre look. So beefy. Will get alignment + balance within the coming weeks > Common sense really. I'll be fixing up the exhaust as well, bringing the ends of the tips into line with the plastic bumper. No more burnt legs for me!
What pressures should I be running these at? Owners of the same mags, post up!

Yeh 17's on a 2nd gen (especially mad ones like those) really make it look something else!
Just to clarify, the car is on uneven ground and on an incline so the gaps in the wheel arches are waaaaay exaggerated. Will get level ground pics later.

Now, what pressures should these run at?
Need to know as they're making a tad of road noise/ever so faint squeeling around corners. A balance and allignment should fix it, however I'd like to know anyway.
Oh, and these tyres aren't exactly legal either *sheepish grin* 235/45 on 17" ain't allowed. I'll have to be super careful and not have any accidents (insurance) and get 225/50's put on when these wear out, and THEN tell insurance people.
esemte, I had a gander at yours before doing mine. Wouldn't have done it otherwise if yours didn't look so sweet. Looks like you've done a polish job in those pics!
The car *may* get lowered with a few *other* modifications in the coming months, but that's a secret for now.
OH. and what's the load rating on these tyres, how does one find out?

Oh they fit just fine, however they *almost* have that fat roll look to them, like when you see chicks with too tight pants and they have the (-muffin-) effect.

Just curious as to why that's illegal?
Is it because of the width of the rim?
I'm getting 8inch wide 17's (yours are 7inch wide yeh?) which come with 235/45 standard.

Yes, the VRX wheels are 7"
Tyre and Rim Association of Australia stipulates that a 235/45 tyre can only legally be fit to a 7.5" rim. 7" rims are to have 225/50 tyres.
As far as I know 8" wheels aren't allowed on magnas as they are more than 26mm (1 inch) wider than the stockies from the factory (assuming 15" wheels in NSW). 235/45 is legal for 8" rims.
All this business about 17" being legal on 2nd gens as it is two sizes up is RUBBISH. You can put whatever you want on so long as the overall rolling diameter does not increase by 25mm (again in NSW). Good luck finding 19's and tyres that do not exceed the rolling diameter by over 25mm.
*rolling diameter includes rim and tyre combination
For example:
OLD: 205/65 R15 6" wide, rolling diameter = 647.5mm
NEW: 225/50 R17 7" wide, rolling diameter = 656.8mm
In this example the width has increased by 1 inch which is legal, and the rolling diameter has only increased by 9.3mm (or 10mm to be exact).
What I have:
OLD: 205/65 R15 6" wide, rolling diameter = 647.5mm
NEW: 235/45 R17 7" wide, rolling diameter = 643.3mm
In this example the rolling diameter has DECREASED by 4.2mm (or 5mm to be exact). This is why the speedo is pretty much the same when fitting 235/45 after running 205/65.
SO, while 235/45 tyres DO NOT increase the rolling diameter greater than 25mm (as stipulated by NSW RTA) they DO increase the tyre width by more than 1 inch (26mm).

In victoria it states that the width can be only be 1 inch wider than the maximum factory standard, which would be 7 inch for the VRX rims wouldn't it?
Oh, and I thought I'd add that these Sava Intensas have a load rating of 93. The TS, happily has a load rating of 92 on the tyre placard.
They're also made by GoodYear it would seem.

Well, depends if you got the 14" or 15" stockies.
I know that the V6's came with 15" which are 6" wide. In this case a 17" rim that is 7" wide (1" inch increase in width) is perfectly legal.
If you have 14" wheels however then you may be in trouble. I don't know the width of 14" rims fitted to TR/TS magnas.

I know they'd definately be illegal on my car, but i'm planning on putting them onto a 3rd gen magna (most likely TJ).
Then i dont see any problems with that?

8" is fine on a 3rd gen, according to RTA. This is for 1201kg cars and over (unladen weight).
Also, your front wheels cannot be wider than the maximum permitted for rear wheels on your vehicle or 204mm (which is 8 inches)
I quote NSW RTA
Font wheel drive cars tyre width shall be no more than 26mm (1 inch) greater than the widest wheel option offered by the vehicle manufacturer.
SO, if you can find an 8inch rim that's good, part one OK. You then need to find a tyre that complies with Aus Rim and Tyre handbook that can legally be fit to this rim and is not greater than 1 inch in width than the largest tyre fitted to the 3rd gen from the factory.
So, if you get 225/50 17" wheels with your 3rd gen that are 7" wide, you can go for a 8" rim with 235/45 tyres legally. This is because the rolling diameter increases by 11.9 (or 12mm to be exact) which is under the allowed 25mm (RTA NSW).
For third gens with 16" or 15" rims however, I would hazard a guess at 8" not being legal.

The law is the same in vic regarding tyre width. You pretty much quoted exactly what i have read.
Vehicle specs of the 3rd gens are:
15x6(i think)
16x6(MIGHT be 6.5, pretty sure its 6 though)
17x7.
Because mitsubishi offer it as a factory option (the 17x7), 17x8 is perfectly legal :).

Good, I thought I had it right. 17x8 is fine, so long as T&R Ass. Aust. handbook guidelines are adhered to regarding tyre sizes.
8" is apparently the legal maximum size we can fit to out magnas, however insurance companies may not like this and say that 7" is the largest.
So unfortunately my tyres aren't legal as the tyres fitted make the front wheel widths 26mm (1") greater than the widest optional wheel from mitsubishi (which for the 2nd gens is 6").
This can be fixed by fitting 225/50 tyres, as I will be when these wear out. Until then I have to be super careful as my compo insurance would be void due to unroadworthy tyres.

Yeh i noticed with RACV that i could only go a maximum of 7 inch wide rims on my TR. Not sure about the TJ though. Might have to give them a call.
Funny when I called the GIO they didn't ask for sizes, tyre specs widths etc. Didn't even ask if it was legal or not. Just said yep, thats X dorra amount more on your premium.
For any GIO staff here, I will be fixing the problem.

He has a TS V6, is yours a 4 cylinder? The V6 would have a higher rating.

Correct. I *think* that all V6 TR/TS came with 15" steelies, hence the higher load rating. 4 cylinders get the 14" steelies, lower load rating.
Someone who knows each TR/TS model inside out would be better able to clarify. Mayhaps only the TS V6 gets the 15" stockers.

Pretty sure TR V6 got 15" stockies, and TS 4 cylinder got 15" as well i think (not sure on that last one). But yeh 4 = 14, v6 = 15, general rule :).

can anyone give me a rough price on a set of TJ series II vrx 17" wheels and tyres? thanks
Hah, good luck getting them new. You'd be second hand shopping for sure. Depending on the condition of the rims and IF tyres are included (and if you pick up or require postage) you can be looking at around $900 to $1400.
I believe someone here once saw a set in a Mitsu dealer for $600. That was ages ago though. Mitsubishi (or so I have been told) want around $300 per rim. Can anyone confirm this?

I have 17x7" wheels with 225/ZR17 tyres and I'm running 41psi at the front and 39psi at the rear. Anything lower than about 35-36psi on 17's will tend to wear the tyres too quicklly and reduce wet weather grip.
