Hey,
I'm looking at getting some 17 inch mags, and i am wondering what the correct dimensions are to keep the same overall diameter on a 3rd gen V6? the rims are 17x8.
Any help would be great :D.
Also i know on my 2nd gen that if i put any rims wider than 7 inch on, RACV wont touch me, though i'm thinking of putting my insurance through just cars insurance. Would just cars care if i have 17x8 inch rims on a 3rd gen v6?

Thanks for your help :).

Leigh.

Yeh i have that site bookmarked, but it doesn't help when a)i dont know the original tyre size and b)i dont know what combinations you can get at what prices etc.

225/50 for the 17x7 is what came with the VRX and Ralliart wheels.

For 17x8 I think 235/45 comes closest to the similar rolling radius...have to do the calculation...

225 x 50% = 11.250cm tyre height
235 x 45% = 10.575cm tyre height

So the 235/45 will be 0.675 smaller in rolling radius or 1.35cm in total diameter which I think is acceptable...

However I am not sure of what roadworthy regulations are in different states with respect to the width of the rims...

what i'm not sure on is how do you factor in 8inch wide on the tyre calc rather than 7 inch wide?

the 3rd gens use the exact same tyre dimensions as 2nd gens....

Not true, the 4 cylinder on the 2nd gens is about an inch smaller in diameter. Stock 4 cylinder tyres are 185/75 R14 correct? Compare this with a stock 15/16/17 inch tyre on a 3rd gen...

its close enough..

the 225/45-17 are pretty much an exact match for ur car.. but 225's are generally harder to find cheaper cause 235's are more common. So to answer ur question 225s are what u need for the right sizr and insurance reasons.

anyway.. every set of rims ive bought were from a 3rd gen and the diameters were always the same. Maybe off by a small percentage but thats normal, including my 18's now.

Yeh it's about 4% i think, maybe abit less. But mitsubishi make the magna 5% too slow anyway, so its not gonna make any difference. My question is, having the rims being 8inch wide instead of 7 inch wide affect the ###/## number?

Ohhh

no the size of the rim itself doesnt make a difference at all.. It just means if u have an 8 inch rim u use 235 or higher.. if its 7 inch rims u use 225 or smaller.

for insurance and legal reasons u cant use 8inch.

I just had a look up for rim regulations and it states that i can go 25mm (1 inch wider) than the highest stated OE, which would be 17x7, so i cant see why i cant go 17x8. On a 2nd gen i see this as being a problem as the widest rim was 6 inch i think. Gerard, how wide are your 18's?

If anyone is reading this who has 8 inch wide rims on their maggie, can you please post up if you have had any issues? physically, legally or insurancy? lol.

can i just ask.......WHY ON EARTH DO YOU NEED 8inch wide wheels? you drive a 4cyl auto magna, not a GTP touring car. I dont think traction is an issue. and if u want more grip in the wet wider tyres are not the way to go.

225/50's on 6.5" wheels is more than enough.

Mmm, When I put 225/50's on my sports wheels(6.5") the guy at bridgestone who I know said "that was a close fit man, we only just got them on"
The tyres were firestone wide ovals, other tyres might fit more easily.

You're missing the point.
1) I'm selling the TR and getting a new car (TH/TJ).
2) The rims i want are 17x8, has nothing to do with me wanting 8 inch wider rims, i would prefer 7, but the rims i want are 8 inch wide (XR6 rims, picking them up in a week and a half :)).

Just found out that my new rims are 235/45/R17, so that works perfectly for me :D.

That would be your tyres? Anyway there are 2 issues here:

1) Which rim width is legal for your car and your state and whether the insurance company will insure it

2) Given that rim width, which tyre is legally allowed to fit the rim.

The 1st answer I do not know. The 2nd answer can be found on tyre catalogues - for example you should NOT fit 235/45 on 17x7 rims but you can fit 235/45 on 17x8.

I've had a look at state regulations and it says i can go 1 inch wider than the largest OE, which would be 17x7 on the VRX. So i can safely go 17x8.
Well yeh these rims are 17x8 so 235/45 works out fine for me :).

If it helps, the stock tyre is 205/65/15, and I've got 235/45/17s on now and they are the exact same rolling diameter (out by bout 0.5%).
