View Full Version : 12mm MDF - best bet??

hey guys,

(and before I get flamed, yes I have done a search :) - that is the reason why I posted the question - as I get the impression that the general consensus is that 12mm is the best!)

As per above, I have been reading a lot of the threads on car audio recently and see that most members prefer to use/recommend 12mm mdf when installing splits/making mounts for 6inch in the rear etc...

Without sounding dumb, as I have pretty much kinda answered the question already - is that what most of u think?

Having a go at 'preparing' the mounts for JVC 6inchers to go in the rear (where the stock 6x9's are) and MTX splits to go in the front - my mate is helping me with the whole install next week (+JVC deck + 15inch sub in box + 2 amps - one for sub, one for 4 speakers). I want to at least mount the 6inchers + woofer part of splits this week if I can just so I don't have to muck around too much next week, as we will only have half a day to do it all ....

.....so the short story is I am off to buy a sheet of MDF today and was thinking of going the 12mm... ??? (bearing in mind that from what I have read, there is not much room under grill of rear speakers, that is why I will need rather thin but still thick enough if u know what I mean!)

p.s. sorry bout the long post... thought it was better to explain it all...

cheers guys.

yeah thanks for that. :) suppose I should take cautionary measures!

oh well, I have made up my mind anyhow - no time to waste, I'm off to buy the 12mm now!

cheers.

Used 12mm here. I just looked at the mdf they use in home theatre, didnt see any much thicker than 12mm and it's not for a high spl sub box so I figured 12 would cut it.

just remember, if they are too tall to fit under the grills, you could mount the MDF under the shelf. i will be doing this soon aswell

thanks for the replies guys :)

Asylum - yeah I read about that as well, putting the mdf underneath... didn't end up cutting and checking yet, but thinking because of that thickness (12mm), will probably need to do that.

any1 else used mdf and had to put it underneath, as it don't fit above????

btw - was a cVnt to take out the stock 6x9's!!! 3 screws out on both speakers, except for the 1 screw which is closest to the middle on both sides - tried with a very short screwdriver and also a little kit that I got with the JVC pack - little attachable screws to an adjustable turner (kind of hard to explain - but was shorter than the 'short' screwdriver - long reach and flexable to get into those hard to reach areas - but still not small enough to get the ba$tard out!!!)

how did u other guys get the last screw out - does any1 have those tiny screwdrivers (long reach but very short)??? like the ones the professional car audio guys use (know the one I mean???) wonder if it is expensive to buy - would make taking that last damn screw out easier!!!!!

oh, I read on one post that some people used pliers to turn the last screw out from underneath (from the boot) ... may try that, but don't want to wreck the thread if I can help it.

cheers.

I used my screwdriver bits out of my electric drill box and from memory an 8mm spanner to turn them for the back 4 :)

I bought a 3pc L shape screw driver set. Each of the 3 drivers has a flat and phillips head at either end and bend 90degress on head up and one head down at either end. For just the phillips head bit it is only 3-4cm tall!! Best $15 I have spent after doing a couple of magna 6x9's. :D

i'd be using a long bolt from the top, and then tightening the nuts from underneath. possibly using washers or a 2nd bolt to prevent it coming loose and rattling. will solve the L-shaped screw driver problem tho!
