You need a VGA (or better) touch screen - type that into ebay and you should come up with a few options - if you are fabricating it into your dash it will take more effort - but you can take the screen out of the casing of most of those that you find on ebay.
If you use a normal screen (eg DVD player type screens) the resolution will not be good enough to use for computer purposes ) bit like connecting your TV to the computer - Ok for DVDs but not for using the computer...
Yeah and www.mp3car.com is your friend!
i think getting a touch screen hooked up to the mac, and finding the proper software to run it might be an issue.
windows is so much more popular in terms of carputers...but yeah, i reckon a mac would be so much better :P
Easy stuffs =]
The original one of these that i worked on was an uber rush job and looked ****, but i mounted is flush with the console. However... when i decided to relocate the unit (in your case, you're probobly looking at installing a dvd player/drive under the screen (and hook it up elsewhere to the carputer), you can do that with ease as well.
touchscreens are fair cheap nowadays on ebay, but if you want to mount it in the console itself go 8" or a little more. You've got the room!! If you want to mount it down lower on the console though, you will be limited by size (hence why ive got a smaller screen.. next time i'd go 8").

There are many gps softwares around, and if you were to buy legitimatly - go with windows. If you are naughty, illegal etc etc - there are some good linux gps stuff around, with lots of program/media manager softwares too. mp3car.com as said earlier - is your friend!!

i actualy did this as a quick project for something i thought would jazz up the interior, but costs we'rent that high. im selling it atm and its got a little interest, and it looks like i will be carbon fiber'ing a layer on top for looks (cause it sure as hell aint light :P). If your interested in doing it, i did a mini tutorial on the screen bezel part (not the headunit extension), so if your keen to do something like it yourself, pm me).

Will an 8" screen really fit in the double DIN area. It comes in 4:3 ratio. I wanted to get one but always thought that the 7" 16:9 was the best fit.
by the way best brands for VGA touchscreens are Xenarcs, the cheaper ones are lilliputs:

I will be going the carputer path soon too. All planning done. waiting for some savings :D
PM if you need more info. You can read more on www.mp3car.com

if you buy a 7" or a 6",you will be lucky to find one that fits exacatally anyway (both height and length). You will need to mod the console to make it look perfect. (Im pretty sure if you were to go 6 or 7 inch you will need to increase (cut) the height of the 2 din pockets, and reduce (fill in) the sides.

Yes, that's the best VGA touchscreen around (if you can afford it). 7" is the most common one used for carputers. It has everything, touchscreen, 1 VGA, 2 AV inputs, auto power on (signal detection), auto source switch, a IR remote and even a small built in speaker :D Good quality too.
there are simillar models without the touchscreen, and other without the 2 AV inputs (only 1 VGA), to suit your needs.
