View Full Version : Engine Removal
Ok, replacing the trusty old Astron II with a new one, So has anyone got any experience in removing these engines? Ive removed Holden 6cyl's etc before, but not these. Anything i should know before i start? any tips on making the job easier? maybe a quick run down? Thanks!

not a great deal of difference to what you've done b4. Make sure you take notes of where all the hoses and wires go.
Drain the engine and trannie. Take out the CV's (dont yank on the end of em) and the rest is fairly straight forward. :)

When you are lifting the engine/gbox out make sure you have attached so you can tilt the gbox down while you lift the engine up. Otherwise you wont get it out between the towers.
That’s the only part i had trouble with.
Or, if you can, go from the underneath. It's much, much easier that way.
But, as it was said, it's easier to remove the whole shebang in one hit, rather than separating the engine and gearbox.

tie things like power steering pump, air con. etc. out of your way, you need all the space you can get
Ok, Thanks for your reply's guys.
Ive prepared it for removal, disconnected everything from the motor, labelled everything as i went. All that is left is the engine mounts and the CV/ Axles...
No doubt i will have to support the engine while unbolting engine mounts etc... will it be easier to jack the car up to remove the axles etc? and once the engine/trans is removed can i still move the Magna around the shed to reposition her etc? I mean removing the axles/engine/trans etc dosent make it impossible to roll does it?
Never removed the engine/trans on a FWD car before :P

well, unless you have rollers under the car, there will be no front wheels on as you have taken the cv joints out. lol

Hrrmm.. might have to leave the gearbox in then and just remove the engine as i will need to move the rolling chassis.. thanks.

fat chance getting the motor out without gbox not much room
buy some big bolts nuts and washers to go through where the cv joints normaly are...then you will able to move the car still :P
least the wheel bearings wont fall out

The one I bought last weekend didnt have any CV's in it and we pushed it up onto the car trailer just fine, steered and all :D
You can reattach the hubs to the suspension arms, with the CVs out, enabling you to roll the car. It won't be terribly easy to move, though.
Im having massive trouble removing the left side axle...cant get it away from the housing of the relay shaft... and the manual isnt helping much at all... think i might just burn it

make sure you are pulling it out straight, i had a few problems till i realised i was trying to pull it out at an angle. swing the suspension to one side with your arm to move it out of the way till the driveshaft is pretty much straight, and give it a yank, should be fine. My manual said to use a pry bar to remove it, but i couldnt get it to work like that, or my tools werent the right type.

the cv's are an easy job once you have done em once as for plucking a motor hmmm cant be any harder than droping the gearbox out vier the driverside wheel arch to do the clutch.. come to think about it, it would have probly been less effort to remove the motor to do it
