Hi,
I have a 1996 TE V6 3.0 litre magna auto, if i select D or R when it is cold there is whiring sound coming from the vicinity of the alternater side of the engine, if i select neutral again the noise disapears and the engine sounds fine. Also the noise completely disapears as soon as the engine warms up. Gearbox oil was recently changed as was the filter.
The gearbox performs fine otherwise. The car has done 175ks so far.
This started approximatly 6 months ago.

Any ideas?

Gez.

It may be your accessory belts?

Hi everybody and thanks for the welcome,

Already changed all accessory belts and Auto gearbox fluid levels ok, although might have exceeded change time for trans fluid. Maybe it's something to do with internal filter partially blocked, causing initial starving of "pump" or whatever is in there to move fluid. Any thoughts?

Out of interest does the whining stop when you load the alternator? eg, turn on high beams, press brake etc all at the same time? Your car idles lower when in gear so i might be happening at a certain RPM. Might just be the alternator.

Is it like a grumble groaning noise like a bearing rattle which is common? If so, check out the post in 3rd Gens "grumble from engine when cold".

That will help.

take a belt off one at a time and locate the problem.

Hi again,

I will try the suggestion of removing the belts and see what happens when i start engine and engage gears.

Today i let the engine / gearbox warm up to about quarter on the gauge and there was no whirring noise evident when i selected gears.

The noise, when it occurs can be heard inside the car when first starting and selecting D or R from cold.

Maybe it has something to do with the lower initial idle speed when i select gears, but this only started 6 months ago , don't remember it happening before.

The noise emanates from around the belts area and only when cold and gears selected otherwise the gears are ok.
