Hi all,
Ive got a Response 12" 300Wrms sub, and was getting ready to make a box for it. Ive designed the box using WinISD (29.5ltrs - including volume for sub). I will be running it off of a Response 2x150W amp (500Wrms bridged).
Now I was going to use 25mm MDF as its only a small box so hopefully Id get away without any interior bracing and it would be nice and solid (and heavy!).
But I just notices SuperCheap can get the Aerpro premade/carpeted with filling for $88-$99. These are almost exactly the right volume (~28.36ltrs). Only problem... they are only made from 12mm MDF...
Sub Box (http://www.aerpro.com.au/p.php?pcode=SB12&xno=10)
Now is this a problem really? Is this too thin? I would have thought it was, but hopefully someone can confirm this???
Only reason is that they arent a bad looking box and its almost not worth making my own for that price if its going to be ok... Certainly better than I would be able to make...
Cheers
Pete

for "only" 300WRMS, a box made out of 12mm could be ok, i normally use 18 for my boxes (although the next one will be 25mm with a 33mm front  )
i've heard other people use them without too many hassles, maybe a little extra deadening would be worthwhile

Make it yourself dude. For a sub 12mm will give too much flex.
And are you sure they use mdf?
Many dont...
Go the 25mm without bracing. Glue, drill and screw. Then glue all the joins from the inside with pva to make sure theres no leaks.
When carpetting use a very sharp stanley knife and cut on a 45 degree angle into the carpet edge so you get good overlap on your joins and it will all look seamless.

18mm is your best bet... Lucky for me i have a cabinet maker directly across from my work, i designed a box using BassBox Pro, gave him the parts list and look what i have next to me a day later.... A flat pack including all the angle cuts ready to screw together... Gotta love craftsmen!

Dont go less than 16mm, probably use 18mm unless the front of your box is going to be long ( then go 22 or 25mm ) but a 30l box cant be that big really. :D Enjoy the build.

That's awesome! Wish I could do that here!
Like the guys have stated above, it always depends on the amount of flat surface and the amount of pressure the sub can push.
You don't go below 18mm. Most subs will happily run in an 18mm enclosure. However for larger or more powerful subs (eg IDMAX, TDX, XXX, XT etc) you'll need 25mm or 36mm thickness.

hmmmm what would be the IDEAL thickness for my dual JBL GTO 1202D subs?
ill be buying MDF around new years so what thickness do you reckon i should get?

Ok well thanks for the advise guys!
Im going to go 25mm just for the hell of it, and then I will have a bombproof box as well! Hopefully starting this friday! Just doing a rectangle box, not going to do a sloped baffle or anything, as that would be getting too hard for my woodworking skills!
Now to decide whether to mount the sub basket in or out... hmmmm

Mount it arse in, if you want something to show a little booty then go and get a hot girlfriend :D
25mm box should be good :D
Only pre-fab boxes worth looking at are the ones from Beva. They are all 18mm MDF, chalked and properly sealed but you really are better off making one yourself

hmmmm
Just been talking to Complete Audio... They will do a custom sub box fitted to my boot (not wiring but Ive already done that) for $250. Thats 18mm MDF, carpeted, tuned volume etc.
Now for the cost of 25mm MDF, non-acidic glue/silicone, screws, carpet, clamps (we have the rest of the tools but no clamps) and the couple days out of my holidays it would take me to do it, and the fact that ive never made one before so will be trial and error... is it worth it... $250 hmmm is that a reasonable price?

even better... Just rang Tonkins down at Salisbury (guy down there has a magna full of Focal gear!) and they have premade boxes (18mm) for $140-$150. Ranging from 0.75cuft to 1.2cuft.
I need a box around 29ltrs (Just over 1cuft) so Im going to duck down tomorrow and see what they are like.

18mm MDF with Internal Bracing will Survive till 125db before Flexing
If you wanna go Louder then 25mm is advised..
Beware a 25mm Sub enclosure is going to weigh a Tonne Be sure to mount the enclosure properly or it will Slam into the Back of the seat with Huge force during emerncy Braking...

Heh, even better, loosely place the subwoofer box on your backseat and slam the brakes on, let's see what window smashes first. :D
Anyways, yeah, agreeing with magnat on this one. I'd personally go with 25mm or thicker.

Ultimately the thicker the better, if you can afford the few extra dollars for 25 go for it....the aim is the build the most rigid box you can...theres no such thing as over kill!

Well its all go.
Got a bonus 3 hours off tonight, so called into Tonkins and chatted to the guy there. (The one with the Solara. Full of Focal and Eclipse gear... one NUTS sound system!!)
For $160 they will fit my sub in the 18mm box, including internal wiring, damping and sealing the sub so there are no leaks.
He is a fantastic guy to talk audio with and really knows what hes talking about! So picking it up tomorrow night and hopefully fit it in my boot before tea!
Thanks again guys, but for $160 I couldnt be bothered wasting my money and time to do make something which wouldnt look or sound as good.
Cheers

No worries! I have to find someone with a digital Camera, as mine is in for repairs (and has been for a couple months now  ). Of just the box with the amp in it? Cause that is all they are doing... Im fitting the box in the boot myself... not sure how yet, but will figure something out... (hint: Suggestions! :D )
