View Full Version : TJ Dash Rattle
Hi All,
I've recently bought a TJ 02, done low Km's and I've noticed a vibration/rattle from my dashboard when slowly accelerating from stopped. :doubt:
Im probably over-reacting because it only lasts about a second but its getting annoying, does anyone else have this problem?

Hmmm something is definitely loose because the maggie is one smooth puppy from step off.
Where is the rattle coming from? It could be a stray screw caused by a previous owner pulling the dash out for some reason. If so pull the dash out and feel around for any screws stuck somewhere. If it's not that I'm assuming it's coming from the centre HVAC/Radio stack?
If so, I too had a squeaking problem over bumps when I first bought mine. It was the plastics rubbing up against each other. Could be a problem on take off whereby the dash plastics rub/twist from the huge torque output. I simply pulled the lot apart, sprayed some Shelley's Ezyglide and put it back to together ensuring the screws were tighter. Problem solved. If it's originating from around the instrument cluster I suggest the above process. Just pull apart and put back to together tighter.

Thanks, yeh it's very smooth other than that! Is it quite a big job to pull it out and put it together? Will I have a problem with the airbags if i pull the dash apart? Its quite difficult to locate, it sounds as though its coming from the top of the dash...

Once you get started, it's pretty simple and no air bag work required. It's mostly clips holding the whole lot together. Without hearing the rattle for myself, I'd just remove the centre console first as his section would be more prone to rattles in my opinion. Just take it apart, spray ezyglide or something similiar where plastic meets plastic then put it all back to together. Also ensure the screws are tight as well and check around whilst its apart for any loose objects.

Nope can't find anything for the instrument cluster. If you want to remove and then retighten the instrument cluster, there is the black surround with two screws in the top of it (need a stubby screw driver). Remove those screws and the firmly pull the surround out. Un clip the trip buttons and dimmer switch. Then you should see 4 screws surrounding the instrument cluster itself. With a long screw driver remove the screws and the gently pull the cluster out. There is one plug at the back left which you will need to unclip. And that's it, simple as. Once you have the console and cluster out you should be able to see pretty much everywhere inside the dash.
Not saying its not your plastics rubbing but when i thought i had a squeak in my dash in the vent area it turned out to be the windscreen seal. But mine used to do it over bumps and while turning not just accelerating.Anyways good luck I hope it is easy fixed. :D

This will prob sound silly. . . but i had a rattle in my TH i thought it was the dash too but it comes from the mirror if it hasn't been touched for a while...... move it up down and around and re position it. . it worked for me no more rattle. . .

Some very tough fingers, they held in pretty firmly. My fingers felt like they wanted to snap before it would come unclip and come out.
