Has anyone else noticed that their car feels faster without the aircon on...

i have been noticing this lately as its been hotter and im using it more, but if i turn the ac off the car feels a hell of a lot faster!

I'm thinking this is a bit weird as i dont notice this difference in any other cars that i regularly drive (vs, terios, rio, camry(4 & 6), falcon)

and all along i thought this was common knolodge

the AC runs on a belt system which is connected to the rest of your engine - which in short,

when you want cool air creates extra friction on this belt - which doesnt help engine proformance.

laymans termslol

Hey, I knew about Aircon killing performance, but mine also makes a bit of a grinding/scraping noise when it's on. My car also seems to make the same noise when it's cold and just accelerating irrespective of whether the aircon is on or not. Does this mean, or at least, be quite probable, that one or more of my belts is out of whack or in poor condition?

Could be a belt or a bearing in one of your accessories. Do 3rd gens have idlers for adjustment? :)

well when the compressor is trying to compress gas at 250psi umm yea its going to use a lot of engine power, your normal air compressor pumps about 120 psi

ive seen ac pumps hit 400 psi

well look at the cars compresion norm 150 to 180psi

2nd gen magna's disengage the A/C compressor for 5 seconds if the throttle is above 73% open.

Hey guys,

noticed the thread about loss of performance.....I am new to my Magna, but I measured the loss of power on my modified ex Golf IV.....

With A/C off bhp at wheel was 235
With A/C on bhp at wheel was 221

Hope it helps.

Cheers,

Chan :gtfo:

Yeap on average the cars we see on the dyno lose about 7kw with the aircon on and about 5kw with the thermos going, this is a rough figure though as it varies from car to car.

3rd gens do this for WOT not sure what % before WOT. Hammer it with the A/C on and switch it off and you'll feel there's no power surge.

FFEEKy, this is a common issue with almost every vehicle ever fitted with aircon.

It will continue to be an issue until they find a better, thinner refrigerant gas.

The setup of the aircon compressor, the engine power, the heat of the day etc can all effect the amount of drag the aircon causes to each vehicle.

What you really have to remember is that the V6 magna isnt exactly a big engine, and depending on the firing order it can also effect the engines ability to cope when it has extra load.

I think what you are refering to is called a collapsing compressor or belt tensioner bearing. It is usually solvable by taking the vehicle to an aircon specialist and asking them to diagnose and repiar the condition.

Yep, my old car, skotty's new car, had the compressor replaced because the bearings were
stuffed making wirring noises.

I know someone who tried to drag with his A/C on, and had his worst time of the night! actually worst for sometime - years?

edit - it was a 3rd gen.
