Lately I have heard people talk about "Custom Mufflers" AND "Tuned Exhausts" on and off this Forum lately, whats the deal with them? Is it one of those things unless you have some big ponies it doesn't do much?

A better breathing system will give you better power and to some degree economy but IMHO its just a bit overated as a bang for buck option. :)
The best first mod you can do for a magna is put a straight through muffler on.
As for 'tuned' stuff...meh
*edit* just saw your sig. I don't think I have to tell you that lol

Yeah, I know that a straight thru muffler is one of the 1st mods you do so i got 2 shiney ones :) but as I was saying, just with these tuned exhuasts, like how do you tune an exhuast? I have a Greddy Emanage attached to my engine and one attached to my exhaust? The tuning you do with an exhuast would have to do squat so why do people spend money on it?
Also, I found out about a guy who had a muffler made and it cost him something in the range of $1200.

I suppose having a 'tuned' exhaust would be one with the exact perfect size diameter pipes, perfectly placed bends, super effiecient extractors etc?

That would be rite, spoke to a guy today who has a "tuned" exhausts, all it means is the extractors are all perfectly the rite length.
Bah, what a wank factor name...

Refers generally to the primary pipes of the extractors being:
1) All the same length so that the exhaust pulse don't arrive at the collector at the same time or in the wrong order and cause a backlog of gas at the collector. Because no 2 cylinders fire at the same time, the pulses in an extractor with equal length primaries will pass one another creating a vacuum behind each pulse that helps to draw or EXTRACT the next pulse from the combustion chamber. Free efficiency, power and fuel econ.
2) The length and diameter of the primary pipes can move the power curve of the engine. That's where the "tuned" expression originated. Extractors were designed for the TUNED operating range of the engine. Production cars usually just get the cheapest piece of metal that fills the gap between the engine and the cat :doubt:
3) That's enuf for a heavy Christmas on the pc.
