I've watched my mechanic do it?
Should be fairly similar on your engine? He took out the airbox, all the wires and **** that are between the airbox and the engine, and the fuel filter is attached to the firewall down in between. You'll need one of those huge spanner extenders, mine was hella tight to get out though. From what i could see, you pretty much unplug the old one, and plug up the new one.

bascially take note of which is IN and OUT, as its directional, rip it out and slap the new one in, pretty stright forward, and make sure your not directly underneath as fuel will spill out. (only a little)

i have only done this on a cherokee but im guessing its the same deal with any other family car.

hope that helps mate, its pretty easy, just make sure you tighten everything good again

*EDIT, i thought it was at the back of the car!

u will have to use pipe spanners as the nuts will be very tight, if u round them off using a normal spanner u will be in trouble

ok right-o....

well, i looked in the manual, and it says something about relieving the air pressure...

so does that mean to take the filler cap off or wat??

basically u want to remove the pressure in the system to prevent fuel squirting out, its not essential but it will make the job less messier,

u can remove pressure by removing the fuel cap, this will not remove all the pressure but will help, or removing the fuel pump fuse starting the car and wait till car turns off, this methode ensure that there is no fuel in the system

My mechanic had to use a pipe spanner, extended with ahuge metal pole, then used a sledge hammer on the pole (this is at 90 degrees) and nothing, didn't budge a single bit. I went inside to get a drink and when i came out he had it out, so i dunno how he managed it. But get ready for a decent struggle :).

dunno about air pressure but you will have alot of pressure in the petrol
in the gen1s theres a white plug in the passangers footwell(just pull the carpet back and take the side trim off)thats the power to the fuel pump dissconect that then start the car till it conks out then just start it up again to make sure, this will take most the pressure out of the system
also remember to keep a rag under the filter because it will dribble out
also to make my job easyer i ended up only takin the IN side off and undo the pipe that runs to the end of the fuel rail then take that bit off once it was all out of the car

Did mine a couple of months ago.
Slip under the car and undo the electrical connector to the fuel tank, then idle it dry.
The only trouble I had was with the bottom connector of the fuel filter, an absolute mongrel to undo.
Pair of vice grips, very tightly done and lots of muscle.
Just disconnect in the engine what you need to get the clearance to lever it off.
When it "cracked" I thought it was a tooth breaking, my teeth were clenched so tight lol
