Coming from along trip back from the mechanic, I notice it started to stiff up the steering but it was as lighter like 2 days ago and just at the mehanic too but it stiffed up somereason, harder to turn. I check the power steering fluid and it seems to be around the mid of a min and max level.

Hm... :S

Not to sure what to think.

Actually Vinh,

I just got mine back from the mechanic (95,000 km major service, 95k, not bad for a 96 TE :D) and ive got a leak in the powersteering somewhere, he didnt know cos he'd have to clean and wait, but he reckons its either from the steering rack, or the powersteering pump :?

mmmm.. might be an epidemic spreading across the magna range :x

mmmmmmm....

Vinh: Forgot to mention one thing when we talked in PM... Are you sure it's the power steering and not anything else? Take the car somewhere open but don't start the engine, shift it into neutral and try moving the wheel - this should be non-power-assisted steering... Is it the same as when you start the engine?

Otherwise your powersteering is still working (although maybe not the way it should be... )

I have just had my power steering pump replaced because I ran out of power steering fluid then boiled the little amount that was left. This then warped both the internals and casing of the pump.

Believe me when the power steering goes you know about it!!

Apparently I may be up for a new steering rack soon aswell.... not fun :(

Well took it to the dealer mechanic, he says he needs to test it with another guy who comes and picks it up to test, but he said something along the lines of replacing steering rack, the left side of something is broken, or the things that hold the wheels.

Driving home, it felt even more worser, starting to feel the virabration from the road.

if you are feeling a wobble - then it could be a wheel alignment issue - however if he said it was due to the thing holding the wheel on being broken - well then that is prbably the uni - which i doubt other wise you would hear this nasty clicking while turning, or else it is just an attachment off the hub - could also be warped brake rotors - that is in the same area - and they can wobble the steering if they are bent / warped.

yeah i thought the steering was bit wobble but magna steering is light from what people say, the young guy who worked at the dealer mecanic we went to to get the dipstick becuz the car didnt come with one, so we went back there, he took a drove and said yeah powersteering, its a bit of a woble but its ok.

5-10min after we left, steering started to stiff up. I also notice this like on the 2nd day we brought the car, it happen when i was going down a hill and kinda slowing down for lights, it got kinda stiff for like 5-10secs... but it went away.

The te and tf magna's both also have a known problem with a chip in the ecu that controls power steering. The chip is responsible I believe for regulating the amount of power assist at higher speeds to try and give more feel when moving. A mitsu dealer should knwo about it and as it was also a factory recall you may be able to get it fixed for nothing if this is the problem.

Hmm this morning when I drove it to the garage, it dont seem as bad stiff anymore, maybe the 4 days in my garage not doing anything help it... but it still isnt as lose as it was. Im totally confused now.. So will the mechanic proberly, going to give him a ring at 4:30 and see the status of things.

Last thing I want is the mechainic that the dealer sent me to to say its fixed... when it really isnt..
