Seems the onld TM is getting a bit old and dad is out looking for a new TF Magna, before I even knew about it.

He's looking at two, a dk Green 4cyl with 120000k on the clock, and a V6 Dk Blue, witch i didnt grab the klms for, but it has a tow bar and cruise.
Both are Autos.

I Know NOTHING about these models and was hoping for some words of wisdom from those in the know.

Questions include:

Rego in SA will be more for a V6, than a 4cyl, does anyone know how much different?

Is it true the TF 4Cyl is 2.4, not 2.6 like I have in my EFI TM (Yeah, I modded it).

Whats the comparison in power between the TF EFI 4 and TP EFI 4? And the diffrence between the V6 TF and the TF 4cyl as far as power and econnomy are concerned? How much power do I loose with the 4cyl from the lights.

What are the usual features of the TF, EG. Power Windows, Air, Power Steer?

How do they drive? Nice, Rotton, Leave other cars in the dust!?

Any Mitsu faults with this model (Like the timing chain on my TM).

I hear the TF has a belt driven Cam, how often do you change it, and is it external, EG can I change it myself. How much do they cost for the belts?

Thanks in advance.

from a current 4cyl 2.6 owner... RUN. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN

the 4cyl model is actually worse on fuel than the v6`s due to power to wieght ratio in 2nd gens, unsure about the 3rd gens tho..i can only imagine being worse as they are heavier i think?

Ahh yes, but this is the "New" 4 cyl 2.4, not 2.6 like i have now. :D

Sometimes i find my 3l 6 doesnt have enough power i would die of frustration in a 4cyl.
Think how heavy the magna is do you want a 4cyl running it? Nuff said.

well i got good news for u buddy... i have owned a 1997 TF 2.4L Exec(wrote it off) as well and i currently own a 1998 TF Solara V6.

the TF uses the 4G64 engine that pumps out 105kw and 205nm torque (from memory) and the 3.0 V6 (6G72) pumps out 140kw and 255nm torque. well as for economy...there is not much difference (according to some readings i did, there is something like 0.4L/100km difference in economy), but both are pretty good to drive but the V6 is alot better when u are gonna floor the pedal whilst the 4 cylinder can feel a lil under powered when climbing hills. the 4 cylinder rides at nearly 3000rpm@100km/h whilst the V6 sits at about 2100 or 2200rpm@100km/h. i suggest you take both cars for a spin, when u find a nice open straight, floor the pedal, pick the one u feel more comfortable with. ohh by the way...the V6 takes off a hell lot faster and harder then the 4 cylinder...so dun **** your pants when it takes off.

Mitsu dropped the 4 cyl, reason being they didn't sell most likely because when people drove the two and looked at the ~1k price difference everybody chose the v6. Basically the v6 craps all over the 4 in every department except servicing costs where the 6 would be a bit higher.
So my moneys on the 6 and manual, can't go past a manual, drive the two and see.

Go for the 6cyl, the 4cyl just doesn't stack up as well.

Fuel economy isnt different, they both use very similar amounts.

Power different downt look that much on paper. However, when the 4cyl is still trying to get over the line, the 6 will be out the other side of the intersection.

Rego costs are only $60 difference in qld. That mens you will have to save an extra $0.17/day.

TF Features: Adjustable Steering Col. - Tilt only, Central Locking, Engine Immobiliser, Power Door Mirrors, Power Steering, Radio Cassette, Remote Boot Release, Remote Fuel Lid Release, Tacho
Thats for the executive, if you get the advance, that comes with pretty much everything you could want.

thats about all i can help you with.

Go the six! :D

Well mate, in my family we've had the following:

TN GLX 2.6EFI man
TS Exec 2.6EFI auto
KS Ei 3.0 auto
TF Exec 2.4 auto
TF Sports 3.0 auto
TJ Sports 3.5 auto

The thirstiest one was the KS Verada, but the most efficient one by far was the TF 4 cyl. I got the TF 4cyl at the same time my dad got the TF Sports and the 4 was always about 1.5-2L/100km better on fuel. As far as driveability is concerned the 4 was just as good in the lower rpm but the V6 was heaps better above 4000rpm - the 3.0 V6 loves to rev but lacks bottom end torque. The V6 is also far more refined.

Both my father and I agree that the best one of the lot was the TN...that thing would pull a tree down! But thats off topic..hehe

So to summarise my opinion...if you want speed and refinement, get the V6. If you want a good reliable, driveable car thats pretty good on fuel, get the 4.

dont get the 4 when you switch the aircon you can feel the difference, the four slows donw a bit , the 6 barely even changes in power when you put the aircon on and also the 4 wont cope with a full load like the 6

and damn those 2.6 4's in the tr ts models were so thirsty cant comment on the earlier models cause ive never driven em

and this is exactly why i wouldnt wish a 4cyl upon anyone..i live 30k from work and i just filled up today..yet I only expect to be able to drive to work an back 4 times...each trip to work and back is a quarter of a tank..

i just bought meself a TF (all stock atm :D ) and i love it its the 3.0 V6 it poops all over my bothers commodore SS with a modified exhaust from the lights but after 3rd gear he gains it back. but i couldn't drive a 2.4 in anything the same size as a magna so i suggest a 3.0L. just my 2c worth

think of it this way....

4cyl are great small engines for pulling around small cars.

you dont get a 4cyl to pull round a big heavy 1.5tone car, its just not right. all well and good for an almost a ton corolla, or nowhere near the ton charade, but not in a magna.

Well Taking everones advice I just brought a Oct '96 TE Magna Advance V6 3.0l.

Is there any way of converting the built in remote door opener to the alarm that the TF has as although the imobiliser seems rather secure, I want to add my meaty sound system from my old car to the TE. The imobiliser won't stop someone pinching all the sound gear out of the car though!
