View Full Version : accessing spare tyre with 4 subs......

can anyone come up with an idea how i can keep my 4 subs and still be able to access my spare tyre without too much hassle? BTW the spare is a VRX 17" aswell... would be sick if i could intergrate it into the display!
the subs need about 28L each... and are currently in the box in the pic.... that weighs prolly about 60 odd Kg.....

  your stuffed buddy!!
i suggest take out the tyre you have now (will lighten the car) and when traveling, buy a set of roofracks and put the tyre on that :D
dude, its gonna be hard to have 4 subs with correct box dimention and a Spare tyre!!
very hard! unless you want to take out the sub box when you change tyres, and golly, that look heavy!! 60kg on its own!
What about splitting them up? and mounting them on their sides? (subs facing rear or towards cabin)
2 in the back corners (facing into the middle of the boot) and 2 up front (facing the rear).. Then you have a nice little square where your tire should be.

yeah, it's beggining to look like one of the only options, i don't really want them behind the back seat, as i like having the ski-hole open, and have an un-interupted view from inside the car (also helps with air flow)... pity coz it took a fair bit of time to build that box, and sounds awesome! also building 4 seperate enclosures would be very difficult to get right... maybe i could do something like sinergy's, and then have 2 more either side.... hm....

What if you made a custom install, say have 2 subs on either side of the ski port, and then the other two in the side walls closest to the edge of the boot (where it gets wider)?
You could then mount the amps on the floor in front of the subs at the back and still be able to get to your spare.
:D
say have 2 subs on either side of the ski port, :D
The sub boxes would be too big to have 1 either side.. If he went for depth instead (like your scenario suggests) then he wouldnt beable to get to his spare tire..

Buy a space saver wheel and either attach it to the boot lid or to the underside of the parcel shelf...
I was going to do something like that.
f you want to be really "different"
you could weld up the top of the spare wheel access area..
have a long bolt with 5 plates wit locating bolts out the end attached to the bolt.. hanging down... weld a chain to the tip of the bolt. (make sure that ALLL the thread is covered with nuts so that the slag dosent fall onto the thread)
Then cut out the rear and the bottom of the tyre well...
drill a hole inthe new floor you welded onto the top of the wheel well.. and through the middle of your sub enclosure.... feed the chain throu that.
hook the new bolt and loactors throught the center of the wheel and fan them out so that they will go up into the stud holes of the spare wheel.
Ok now that the "anchor" is through the wheel and the locating bolts are in place... Yank your chain and raise the rubber.
you will have another plate that the bolt comes through that you can then start to tighten up the nut to keep the wheel up.... the nut is able to slide up along the chain... since the chaine is a little smaller in diameter than the nut.
Ok so this MAY work... and yes it "TBuTchers" your car.... but you wanted the alternatives for having such a large sub box in the boot.
you could also get some smaller gas shockies and attach them to the side of the sub box and to the bottom of the boot.... this will help you lift the sub box... to slide the spare wheel in and under...
OR
cut your sub box into three bits and then hing the back of the double one toeards teh ski hole...
hing the sides of the other two subs towards the outside of hte car...
you cuold either use gas assisted struts to help lift out of hte way... or Electric motors to lift (drool drool)
Good luck

yeah, i wonder if i lift the box, if there is enough room to lift the box and slide the tyre out from the bottom... maybe 4 gas struts around the whole box, and a hook under the parcel shelf.... could be interesting, now to find a few people to lift the box to try it out... hmm....

But this is why if you cut the box into the three you would have enough space... as the two side ones can get right out of the way and the one towards the front of the car will lift up and you could slide the wheel underneath.

Oh yeah...didnt think of that. How much room do these subs need though? Because there is a fair bit of room before you get to the spare tyre...Im sure it could work.

One word:
Roof Rack!
looks like 2 words to me
... could just be me though, I got hit in the eye with a squash ball yesterday, might be blurring my vision :?

i reckon you make the box the length and height of the back seats and have 4 chambers one for each sub and where the ski port is you have one big port which all 4 chambers feed....
spl you open the ski port for normal driving you can close the ski port...
have all 4 subspointing backwards it'd be mint....
and then you will still be able to access the spare tyre as you wont have to make the box so deep... they say 28l doesnt mean that 28l will be the optimum size for the car.... you may find that the box of 20l is better suited to the resonance freq to the car
the 28l is only a rough estimate

unfortunatly my last box was the exact height and width of the back seat, and it was the perfect size for 2 12's, i thought about making a similar one for all 4, but it would be just to difficult....
by the way, if anyone wants a dual chamber 12 sub box perfect for a magna, i'll sell mine, needs some new carpet, but thats about it!

surely you could squeeze 2 more subs into that?
mount one down the bottom left corner then 2 in the middle but diag up and the last in the bottom right
kind of
OO
O O
there should be enough room?
or you could go isobarric but then it kind of defeats the purpose of 4 subs...
or mount 4 subs inverted that would look real good....
OO
O O with the magnets poking out
and then have one big port where your ski hole is =]

or you could just take out your spare wheel and buy a can (or two) of that instant tyre inflating stuff!!! around 10 bucks at any auto store or servo....
just my stupid idea.....

My mum just got a Alfa Spyder for her B'day... and it ONLY comes with this mixture that you pour into the valve.. then use the supplied 12v air pump to re inflate. Mind you they also have 3 years road side assist anyway :D
I reckon it would be good enough for an emergency...
if you shread your tyre then you should have been expecting it as it would normally mean that your tyres are bald.

Not necessarily.
My dads sigma had a tire blow out after the tyre bubbled on the inside.
He didnt know it had bubbled, but at 110km/h it went BOOM!
