Howdy folks..
Christmas has come and gone, and i have managed to save up some money for some new tyres.
After putting cheap, crappy "temporary" tyres on the front of the ralliart and having 2 of the standard pirelli P6000's on the back and being fed up with the rubbish on the front (Nexen N3000's) it is time for me to buy a new set..
so what i am asking is what tyres are other ralliart owners (and people with 225/50R17's) rolling round on and what they think of them..
particularly interested in peoples opinions on the Bridgestone Grid II's that came on the series 2 VRX's and the GTV Veradas.. what do you guys think of these tyres??.. anyone got the Grid III's??
I have been quoted $225 each for the bridgestones (grid II) which is pretty good i thought.. but does anyone know what the maximum pressure is that they can hold (ie. 51psi : normally printed on tyre wall, but not on the Grid II's)
Goodyear Eagle F1's have also been highly recommended to me and am getting a price on them tomorrow..
so any other brands that are being used / pros and cons / maximum pressure info / pressure you use / quiet or noisy etc etc
expecting to pay ~$1000 on tyres and dont want to be disappointed by ending up with noisy, crap tyres.. any help will be greatly appreciated
Cheers,
Ben

as i said to you on msn, the F1 GS-D3's were reccomended to me VERY highly, and before that was using the Dunlop Lemans, which suck the ass in a straight line, but for cornering their lateral grip is awesome
also got fairly good mileage out of them (25,000 driving like a nutter)
good luck ben

Grid IIs
Done nearly 45000ks on them (Rotate front to rear at 25000Ks) nearly worn out now tho.
Great handling, good wear but noisier than I would prefer.
Interested to hear peoples experience with other brands.

F1 GS-D3's they are quite fantastic. They telegraph their loss of grip so clearly you can drive far better and more safely at speed. They never just let go, they are quiet and give a better a good ride. Also for 235/45/17 they seem to be quite a bit larger than competitors.

Trust me, you will never go back. If my budget will allow i will be putting these tyres on my 19's in February.
The only tyre that has been rated better is the Michelin Pilot Sports @ around $500 each for 17's.. ($700 - $800 for 19's)
Pirelli are such an overrated tyre (especially for their price)

You really need to read what the mags say, everyone gets defensive over their tyre brand of choice.
That said, Bridgestone Pntenza G3s or S03s get my pick

In the latest issue of Car & Driver in the US they tested 11 high performance tyres. The best tyre was the Goodyear Eagle F1.

I've been recommended to the Eagle F1 G3's as well. Apparently the Bridgestone Grid series arn't all that up for shape, but the SO-3's are great, but don't come in the load rating we need for our cars, unless you plan on running wide rubber tyres which I don't recommend.
When I did a research a couple of months ago, the G3's are practically the best wet weather tyre in the world. Actually the Dec Motor mag had several comparisions, the G3's came at the top for wet weather driving, but not the best for dry performance driving use, but mind you, almost all the tyres in that >$250 performance tyre range (in 17" size) are that much better than your average OEM tyres.
I've been saving up for these G3's (sucessfully achieved), and now I need to find some suitable, affordable rims to fit these rubber on, hopefully I'll find something soon. I'm hoping the tyres will last at least 25,000k's, so I'm targeting (and budgeting now) a set of new tyres every 10 months.

I had 235/45 17" Bridgestone grid II on my TH and rotated every 5000kms and got 70000km out of them at 39psi. i am very particular about looking after tyres. I put Grid III's on them and have so far got close to 50000kms(ex's car now).....will not go another 20000kms though. i liked the Grid II's better in the wet personally. i would go with grid II's. not a bad price too.

I have also heard that the BS GIII are a great tyre and the Eagle F1 are a bit loud, do people who have them think this.
So as people have said on this it is a personal choose and the tyre dealer recommended these out of 5 different brands of that size tyre

like i posted earlier.....grid III's currently on TH(ex's)done around 50000 with probably another 5000 or so in them.....rotate regularly(obviously front to rear only)get balance checked regularly as well wheel alignments yearly. i ran 39psi. they can last a long time if you take care of 'em. and yes a very quiet tyre.

i was nearly going to get grid 2's and they were $900 for 4 ($225 each on special) and to be honest.. there isnt a great deal out there in 225/50R17 that are cheap let alone cheap and quiet..
if you're happy with the grid 2's, id suggest getting them again because they were probably the cheapest ones i could find..

Hey !
Your info cant be correct !!
The load rating is Y94 and thats what the cops really look at aswell as the width and 235x17 is only 10mm wider than the 225x17 which falls within the trafic specs variation from standard and most of the 225x17"s dont have a high enough load rating for the magna so I would like to see some evidence before Id be posting what you said as gospel !

make sure you get the correct load rating for the car, the minimun is 95. The first set of tires BJ put on my car were 94 and the car felt ****, they sibsequantly put on a set of 97 load rated tires and it's a whole different ball game.
As for tire size i went form a 15" rim to a 17" rim and a 235 tire. I do however had a 7.5 wide rim. so not sure how that all works. I know my insurance will only let me go 2" over stock rims.
I stongly recomend the Maxxis tires. they Rock

You want proof?
Here you go:
http://www.goodyear.com.au/showtyregy2004.php?tyre=0000000156263
http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/products/car/treads/gridII.asp (OEM VR-X tyres)
http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/products/car/treads/gIII.asp
By the way, for a direct replacement on the standard 17" magna wheels, the rubber used is 225/50's.
To the person who said having a load rating of 94 is marginally (or a lot more) worse than a load rating of 95, well thats utterly crap, the load rating does not define ride quality or stability. It's more probably because you changed the brand, or series of tyres, maybe even a difference in tyre size?
By the way, TH models and above (maybe pre TH-models too, but I don't know) have a load rating of 94 on the plycard.

actually load rating does define a lot about the tire, a higer load rated tire has a lot stiffer sidewals hence less flex, hence less roll, i had the same Maxxis MA-V1 in a 94 and now in a 97 and it's a different car, so don't kid yourself.
IT IS ILEGAL to dirve a car on incorrect load rated tires, don't belive me as your local cops, it is also an issurance problem.
I was basing the minimum of 95 for a TL, i think it was 96 for another 3 get not sure if it was th of tj

Umm, generally when a tyre maker makes a certain series of tyres, say the MA-V1 for instance, they don't change the tyre compound to allow differences in load ratings in the same size. The load rating is altered by changing the tyre's dimensions.
I had a look at the Maxxis tyre site quickly, and unless they are not posting up their complete tyre range, what I said above is true. If you did have a 97 load rated MA-V1 tyre, then the size according from their site is, 225/55R17 97V. And for the 94 load rated MA-V1 tyre, then the size must have been 255/40R17 94V.
And yes, TL Models which came standard with 15" or 16" wheels come with 95 load rating tyres, whilst the VRX with its 17" wheels come standard with 94 load rating tyres. But most likely you will find on a TL plycard that the required load rating is 94.

oh well i'll have to look into that. But form what i understoof the tire compound did not change but the stiffness of the sidewall. Anyway theya re a great tire. On the placesard for the TL on tires it says 85, hech i didn't have to pay for them so it's all good.

Another option for quiet tyres is the Dunlop LM 602 in 225/50-17. Beaurepaires do them for $255 each. They are OE spec on Fairlanes and don't appear in the catalogues for some reason.
I've had them now for 15,000km and they look like they will go the same again. I haven't been as good with pressures and rotation as I could have been. I run them at 35psi front and 32psi rear (most of the time).
The only other tyres I've had were the 205 Bridgestones so difficult to compare. Obviously these are night and day ahead of what I had especially in the wet due to their silica compound.
While we are on the subject of tyres maybe we should get a sticky organised so that people can put up what they are running with stats such as pressures and how often they rotate them along with comments especially compared to other tyres the've used.

Okay, for those die hard Aussie Magna members who have had trouble sleeping wondering what tyres I went with.
To recap, I have been told I must have the same size tyre on the verada as any other size is illegal.
becasue the GTV is an unusual size they want to charge me more.
Tyrepower have Toyo MP3 (?) for 200 a piece or Bridgestone G111 for 249. The owner of Tyrepower thoroughly recommended the toyo, said they were multi directional, well made and quiet, that I would get same k's out of them as the Bridgestones.
So, any thoughts on the Toyo?
