this just arrived today :D
Alpine SWX-1242D (4ohm+4ohm)
i went to pick up the box and just about dropped it! i didn't realise how heavy this bastard was! (nearly 15kg without the packaging)
next project is to build a box strong enough for it! 25mm MDF with 33mm baffle will be the only way to go! then to feed the whole 1000WRMS into it  (not straight away of course!)

what amp you running that off?
Asylum

i've got an Alpine MRD-M1001 mono block, which puts out 1000WRMS @ 2ohm, exactly what that sub requires :D

i know this might sound dumb, but whats the
difference between the mono block amps and
a 4 channel amp? what is each one used for?

monoblocks are specifically designed for subwoofers.

Monoblocks trade efficiency for frequency response, a thousand watt rms 2 channel amp(class a/b) would be big and cumbersome whereas it can be done in monoblock(class D) with a relatively small package and much lower power consumption. Have a look at the size of a alpine mrd-1005, they're very very small, similar size to most 2x150rms amps.
The cost comes in frequency response, they cannot reproduce mid to high frequencies with any accuracy if at all, so basically this specialises them for driving subs, they drive them harder for the same power consumption with a smaller package.
For more details on how a class D works you'd have to ask someone who's played around with them more, I could name a few on the forum :P

except the monoblock i'm running is one of the biggest amps i've seen! (twice the size of my V12 4 channel!)
from what i've heard the X-Type is meant to be quite a decent performer, while the entire structure seems heavy and clumsy, their SQ isn't too bad for a more SPL designed sub?

Ive had the same sub in my 3rd gen on the MRD-M1005 amp, after a month I realised I was a dork and it was purely a SQ sub. Traded for two type r's which IMO blow the **** out of the one x.

You seen how hot they get running 1000 @ 2ohm? Can anyone say thermal protection? ;):P

i've been running 2x 500WRMS 4ohm subs off it for a while with no problems, i'll make sure i keep it well ventilated once the proper boot install is done
word that thing is MASSIVE... :D good luck with it all!

hwo you gonna mount that thing, if would be ashame to not see the back of that thing. Looks really impressive
Asylum

i'll be mounting it normally, especially seeing it has hidden screw terminals, and a sexy carbon fiber/aluminium/kevlar reinforced cone :)
once the boot install is done properly, i'll look into doing a LED lit perspex window so u can still see the back of it :D
the only problem i can see is the mounting depth of 280mm..... while trying to get the box size around 1 cu/ft

Ya know sum idiot worked out that santa hasta do 7000 times the speed of sound and visit almost 1200 homes per second to do his run in one night. Carrying those bloody things wouldnt have helped. lol lol lol

LOL @ heat comments which I totally forgot.
The monoblock and face of the sub when belted (good operating dooff) the amp gets so hot you can cook an egg on it, yes it gets too hot to touch, and after touching the face of the X after a booting it gets like 30deg ... mine also made a toxic as fck plastic smell..

i was told that 2xType R's would be louder, but not by a real lot. But the TypeX is meant to be more SQ as you said, which is what i'm after :D
what sort of box/layout were u using with both setups? could the huge differences been caused from that?

Pretty sure the x was in a 2 cubic sealed box.. was a beautiful sub, just didn't do what I wanted for the price. Bloody awesome sub regardless, having the one made me want two more than anything, but **** the x and the mrd1005 dont come too cheaply..
My advice having had one in the sealed would be to get a proper ported enclosure, keep in touch and tell us all how the big puppy goes!
Only difference between the one x and the two r's IMO is that with the music I listened to, it just wouldnt make any bass repoduction on quite afew certain notes. Wereas when it actually hits the notes it was nothing more than impressive. Just was letdown by the three things.
1) Both amp and sub got ridiculously hot for my liking.
2) Strangest smell ive witnessed come from an electronic component.
3) Bass repoduction not on every song/particular notes.
But I have to list afew pro's since ive been such a negative bastard about it and feel guilty since its your christmas pressie and all! :doubt:
1) When it hit a note, it was more clear, concise, full bodied bass in comparison to any note ive herd from a subwoofer.
2) Extremly powerful, major excursion.
3) If SQ is your thing bud you'll most definatly be in love.
4) Get brownie points for nobody having one and looks bloody shmeet!

ah nice! i was getting worried i bought a dud for a sec there! (2xType R's would have been about the same price!)
my enclosure is going to be 30L (slightly over 1cu/ft?) the instructions recommend 0.65-1.25cu/ft so maybe the 2cu/ft enclosure wreaked havoc with the tuning.

what are you using for front fill?

i'm using the Focal 130V2 splits in the front, so i guessed matching 130CV1 coaxials would be perfect for the rear. especially seeing they are all 60WRMS each
all woofers are 5" so they're all in custom MDF baffles.
they were a present from my fiancé, but i'm sure they are about $250 RRP  BARGAIN!

they sound shocking! (well, better than stock... but why i went 4 ways i have no idea)
the 6x9's MUST DIE
