everyone who starts in the world of car audio asks the same question and its not studip. My sugestion is go to audio shops and listen to all the different amp sub combinations and what ever you thing sound the best, thats the one you should get. Especially since you can't go for all the high end stuff fro 500 but you will get some good sounding stuff. Make shore you remember to leave about 100 for wiring the thing, as most people forget about tthis then need to wait untill they can afford the wiring.

Also you may want to invest in some sound deadening materials as this way you will get the most out of your system. But fist just find some stuff you like.

With one exception, NEVER GET A SONY SUB OR AMP, they do ok decks but the other stuff is crap. It looks good but it will not perform like you want it too.

I've spent a sh*t load on my sterio and still not happy, it's just the way car audio is

Most subs will stop you from being unable to hear yourself. It all depends on how loud you turn it up :P If you're after just a basic budget type setup, you're best to head over to your local JB HiFi, or whatever you got over in W.A.

Oh, and stay clear of BOSS.

BOSS is worse than Sony so I don't see where you're going with this.

Welcome aboard the good ship AMC mate, hope you have a good time. Dont worry about asking so called stupid questions, when it comes to audio you could write what i know in crayon on the back of a budgies beak. :D

For around $500 try the 12" or 10" Carbon Fibre sub from Jaycar matched with the 2x150W amp. I then got Tonkins to put it in a prefab box for $160.
4 gauge wiring kit from JB HIFI is $79. (I got all my cables seperatly so ended up being a lot more expensive).

JB HIFI has a stack of subs in boxes already for around $300-$500 but that doesnt include an amp. The 12" Cadence sub and box combo they have sounds pretty sweet.

Cheers
Pete

Yeah i agree with Poita, signle 10 or 12 in box and 2X150w bridged or something similar.

I have a 2X150wRMS 4 sale :)

450W RMS bridged, enough to run just about any 10 or 12 or 15 under $400. could prob run 2 10's if u wanted also.

Around $140 for my amp, can get a good sub for around $200, then just wiring and box, easily under $500 :)

OK, here is a Few things we need to look at:

1. How much Boot Space do you wanna Sacrifice?

2. What Equipment have you already got?

3. What Tunes do you wanna crank?? as R&B will require a different set up to Trance

4. I assume since you are new you are going to need to factor in the cost of Installation??

If you can answer these, we can then try and Tailor a Sub and amp Package to suite.

I could add Kenwood to the List of Brands to avoid but everyone is different...

Well for $500, i'd just throw in a couple of Pioneer subs. Prefab box from JB Hifi or whatever, get a jaycar amp to power em up.
