Hey Guys,

I’ve been a member for a couple of months now and have found your forums very useful in solving a few issues!

I've been an owner of a 2003 TJ AWD for a couple of months now and haven’t had any major problems. Yesterday I noticed a clunking noise coming from the front passenger side. At first it sounded like the tyre was hitting the car. I checked it all out and didn’t notice anything loose.

It has now gotten a lot worse. The ‘clunking’ gets a lot louder and quicker the faster I am going, but isn’t very noticeable when I’m accelerating, only when I back off the accelerator. I called the local mitsu dealer and they told me to bring it in, which I will be doing tomorrow.

Does anyone know what this could be related to?? It only got serviced 2 weeks ago.

Hope this makes sense to you all.

Check the wheel nuts.

Try and undo them, usual trick of wrenck on and hit sharply with foot.

Doing up - again the wrench, do up by hand and then hit the end of the wrench with the palm of your hand from about 300 mm away. ABSOLUTELY NO HARDER!!

The only other thing that I can thik of is that the shock absorber is loose in the top mount or is rattling in the top mount.

Hi Steve O welcome to AMC. :D

Could be a loose wheel or wheel bearing. Maybe a CV but unlikely. Mite even be a grabby spot on the disc rotor causing the caliper to clunk. Definately get it checked. :)

Thanks for your replies! Really appreciate the help.

Well, started driving home and noticed that the noise got alot louder and more frequent. After a few k's the car and more so the steering wheel started to really vibrate. I pulled over because by now i was really sh**ing myself. Checked the front passenger side wheel and 3 of nuts were almost off! Grabbed the wrench and tightened them up and drove home without a problem.

What concerns me is that i already checked them yesterday and they were tight. Funny thing is that it was serviced and had a wheel alignment done by mitsubishi about 2 weeks ago. Either they did a bodge job or some kids are trying to steal my wheels

Will get it checked out and let ya know!
