i've planned a sub box for my new type-x, but i dont really understand all the box tuning stuff, so hopefully someone that understands it better can explain it for me!
i've done this with WinISD, filled in as many of the parameters i have available, and this is what it came out with:

Use BassBox Pro 6. It even gives you a parts list of the wood required (including angles, cuts etc). It works a treat.

32L sealed for a single Type-X Alpine 12" sub?
Yes, it sounds roughly right. In a sealed box, anything 5 litres more or less than that 32L figure will still sound good.
That's why I love sealed boxes. :D
I'd be looking ported for that particular sub..... port tuned to about 36-38Hz..... The 60-65Hz peak in the sealed is a bit high for my trance/techno tastes, but might be okay if you like rock....
If you need any more T/S figure for that sub, look at the apline website. Should have them listed.

yeah i'm more of a rock person myself, and sealed boxes are just that much simpler :D
i'll probably measure up some timber and see how i go tomorrow if i'm up to it :D

']how much did all the MDF cost?
they only sell whole sheets, so i've got a reasonable amount spare, i think the sheet was about $90 plus about $10 to cut  then add about $30 for all the screws and glue etc and i still have got it cheaper than a pre-fab!

$90 for 25mm MDF? I got 18mm MDF from a some outdoor furniture place, scrap MDF for $12. Was so big we had to cut it in half to fit it into the station wagon. Don't be buying from Bunnings and all them, visit an ourdoor furniture (the ones in factory areas) they always got plenty of **** they dont really need.

yeah i had a look around, ended up checking just about every hardware/timber place within a 50k radius or Gawler, no-one stocked 25mm, only ordered it in and only 1 place had an off-cut which they cut crooked and was wasted... the last place we checked (Parafield Bunnings) only had the 2 sheets of 25mm tucked away in the corner so i was lucky to get any at all!
unfortunately my brother doesn't go back to work for another few weeks and i'm too impatient for that!... he works for a furniture factory and could have got it all cut for $15

coz they're made out out of 12mm particle board and would struggle to hold the weight of the sub let alone the pressure it should put out!

i couldn't find that program anywhere aswell!! i use WinISD for tuning, and DLS Probox 2000 to get the dimensions right (i'm not sure about the tuning of that program!)
heres the links (both freeware)
DLS Probox 2000 (http://www.dls.se/program/dlsbox2000e.exe)
WinISD (http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?download=winisd)
oh yeah, if anyone has Bassbox Pro, PM me aswell :D

Just as a comparison... I looked at getting 25mm MDF, carpet etc and making my own box...
In the end I went to Tonkins and got a prefab 18mm MDF box, carpeted with Dacron filling and the sub installed in the box with cables for $160. Took 1 hour and then it all went straight into the boot. I would have been looking at not far off of that prices just in materials + the whole weekend stuffing around trying to make my own. And their box looks much nicer than if I had made it!

yeah pre-fab are always nice, but even tonkins said 18mm is just too thin, would have needed a fair amount of bracing, and i enjoy making my own boxes to suit the boot perfectly
It's extremely rare that a subwoofer will work in the exact size of a pre-fab enclosure. In this day and age of sophisticated subwoofers you tend to get the best performance out of a specially designed and manufactured enclosure. :)

:stoopid:
plus trying to find a pre-fab box that will take a sub of this depth would be a challenge! as much as i like buying stuff ready to go, at least i know what glue, screws, sealant etc that is going into this one, so it should *hopefully* never leak/rattle/flex :D

I'd rather have a professional do it all for me to be honest with you. Not pre-fab crap, but getting a professional car audio person to build the box specifically for vehicle and subwoofer. I'd imagine you do this, FHRX?

luckily my brother is a cabinet maker :D
got a quick start on it today, assembled all but 1 side of the box, and cut the hole to mount the sub.
for those who havent seen a sub box made out of 25mm MDF, here ya go!

the "blank" side of the box will be used for hiding excess wiring and routing neatly to the amps, which will be on the back of the box

Certainly. Each and every install we do, we simulate between 40 and 60 enclosures (or how ever many it takes) until I get the best response curve for the install in question. Then we usually use between 5 and 10 actually in the car (test enclosures) to simulate it realistically because the computer is not always right. ;)

Yes well their website is great to find out RRPs, and the specials they have on offer. But the pictures seem to lack a little quality to see how great they are. They offer fantastic prices, and I can only imagine that their is of high quality from all the positive responses I've heard about them.

I thought about putting it in the boot, but its the stupidist place to put it. Think about it, if theres a fire, you dont want the extinguisher in the heart of the fire, so im placing 1 within my grasp and 1 within grasp of a passenger, or, if i lean over a bit, me aswell :)
not for looks or anything, but for practicality
