Did mine today, my car has travelled only 90 000km. Let us assume it had never been changed. JESUS I had to attach a pic of just how much crap was in it. Needless to say the old bomb runs a lot better.
That was a clean rag, it's a wonder anything got through that at all. I guess I can kiss fuel economy goodbye now

Interesting.........
Do you ever run premium petrol thru your car??
If so, what % since you've owned the car, and what brand (if preference was given to any brand).

Yes, yes I do. All it drinks is BP Ultimate. I've only had it for the last 12000km so god knows what before that. My point is that if you car has done these sort of km's or more and it has never been change, best be gettin it done!!

I remember Jason (JasonsVRX) saying that he changed his every 20,000 - and thinking that was a little excessive. I suppose at least doing it that regularly, you could be confident that it was never going to effect performance/efficiency, and no doubt it isn't an expensive part to replace......
How much did it set you back??? genuine or Ryco??

Um, none genuine, IMO they all come from a similar place hey!!!! cost me $21.75 and about 75c of lost fuel LMAO
I better do mine its done 117,000kms with the original filter.

If you were reffering to changing of Fuel filters, I already did a short write up, including pictures. Not the best of what I have done as I was a very newbie then. Do a search on Fuel Filter location and you probably see it.
Till now I have not actually changed mine but will do so next year.

lol, well put it this way I only bought the car since July. Back then I knew very little about the car.
I may rewrite it in proper steps again when I come back from Singapore. I missed my car.

cost me an extra $10 on top of a service to get mine changed. it was that blocked that nothing would run through it, you couldnt blow through it, you could shake it and tiny little drops would come out, when my mechanic put it on his compressor it started to trickle out... hahahah my car had done 205,000 at the time. so i have no idea when it was last changed. the previous owners had receipts of services etc from when they got the car at 110,000 so i went through them and it hadnt been done since they had it. lol
in saying that, doesnt the magna go now! still doesnt catch that friggen camry though..

Pretty sure the only filter that would get changed every service would be your oil filter......
Even the air filter would only get changed at the 'major' service intervals (45,000km's in my TJ)........ I've been meaning to look in the service booklet for my car - but I don't remember seeing 'replace inline fuel filter' on any of the services up to 60,000...... probably one of those things they only change if they're trying to trouble shoot a power or running rough problem.
i changed mine a while ago,
on the dyno it was being starved of fuel up top end
only had been 90 000km haha and it was dirty, really dirty,
so its on my list for every 20 000km to be changed now

i thought the one in the engine bay was the fuel pump(the one thats the size almost of a coke can and its metal , gold in colour. then the one near the fuel tank is the fillter , most of the time it clear. correct me if im wrong

eh??
fuel pumps IN the tank for a start, the gold things the filter and i have no idea what this clear thing what you speak of?
edit: depends on model, early carby gen1s had the pump on the block there goldish
and all carbys had the clear little filter in the engine bay efis have the huge goldish filter

Damn it i wanted to change my fuel filter a couple of days ago when i was doing my suspension and an oil change. But my mechanic friend who was helping me said he couldn't be stuffed coz he was already on holidays and didn't wana do anymore work than he had too (had a hard enough time just getting him to help me with my suspension).
Now that i have seen the picture of one after only 90thou ks (mines on about 115thou ks) im really annoyed that i didn't replace it as its very likly to be the reason why my fuel economy is worse that it should be.

It shouldnt be that hard to change the fuel filter, ask one of your friends to help you out.

I would think you'd have better fuel economy with a blocked filter, as hardly any fuel comes out... just not great for performance..

You are wrong smooth2: the clear filters wouldnt stand the pressure required for EFI and are used on CARBY models only.
The EFI filteres are always metal / alloy encased.
Mine had 118,000 on the original fuel filter (service guys for some reason never replaced it), just replaced it, BIG difference. The custom plenum actually works now (kept up with a BA xr8 ute the other day off the lights, immature I know but I had to get in the left lane).....

I would think otherwise.
People often think that because its flowing less it will mean BETTER fuel economy....
Its the OPPOSITE, If you are flowing LESS then you drive HARDER on the go pedal, meaning that more fuel is required to be pressed through the blocked filter to the engine.
Because the filter is dirty doesnt mean that it is blocked and wont flow fuel through. EFI's pressurise fuel through, so it will almost always get to the engine, even in the case of the picture shown above, and you will notice that you have to use the GO pedal more to get the same response out of the vehicle as you did before the filter was dirty.
Oh yeah and contrary to what I thought, my car is running at about 10.2 L/100kms (approx) before it was 12.1L/100kms (approx), so fuel economy is better with a new filter.

hahah you guys crack me up, 293,000 kms on the original fuel filter! .
Mechanic was in disbelief! But it was date stamped 1991 and everything...The biatch weighed a tonne too. After that i've had slightly less fuel economy, and the fuel pressure doesn't seem to be as high. But the car seems to be running more freely in the top end.

wasnt sure thats why i said correct me if im wrong. its just that i have the bigg metal one in the engine bay and i also have the small clear fillter just before the tank

Not even close. You get what you pay for. Go buy a genuine one, cheap one and a pricy aftermarket one and cut it in half.

umm from memory, the fuel line going into the bottom of the filter has a 17mm end, and the filter has a 19mm hex section on the bottom of it.. (i think).. use an open ended 19mm spanner on the fuel filter, and use a 17mm pipe spanner on the fuel line, being very careful not to round the fuel line, as this easily happens with cheap pipe spanners! the top bolt into the banjo fitting can be " cracked " by using a socket, breaker bar, long extenion, and big hard pull! if u have access to a rattle run and compressor, using that will crack it off in 1 second, easily, and no need to hold the filter while doing it! only ever use hand tools when tightening!
sorry if the sizes are wrong, i havent seen/worked on a TS for years!
