Hi Ya All,
I just aquired an 89 TN and the CV's click a bit, I am sure all the info I need has already been given on these pages, but when I do a search nothing comes up. Can someone tell me how to do a search or point me in the right direction.

err uumm, so what was ur question bout?? if the cv's are making noise like a clicking they need to be replaced. as soon as the cv boot cracks or lets out the bearing lube it needs to be fixed and if it gets to the stage that it makes noise it's already too far gone and needs to be replaced. any other questions just ask and welcome to amc hope u enjoy ur time here and hope u get all the info u need :)

well the 1st gens were designed by the people who bought us the valiant! That makes them better than all the rest! :D
EDIT: Oh and i had the same problem after getting into a fight with a round-a-bout. I had to replace the whole cv + wheel + tire.

Thanks for getting back to me.
The CV's started clicking after I gave it some stick on some gravel roads, but it is not too bad normally, just powering out of sharp corners.
What I want to know is; if I take it easy, will they last?
Will they give an indication B4 they die?
What will happen if they break, the thought of a metal club spinning and pounding away on the end of a drive shaft sounds expensive.
I have been quoted $140 a wheel for the axle and CV, if I do it.
And $175 fitted, which means that they are only charging about 1/2 an hour labour a wheel.
Are these prices about right?
The car is not worth much, and if I can keep it going for six months until I get a better one where I can use this one for parts, or, as it is an EFI, 5 speed and rust free with power steering, maybe I will just get the parts from a better model MK1 that has died and fix this one.
Sorry about the ramble, but at the price you can get these cars, they have to be the very best value for a good car on the road today.

from the sound of it, they do need replacing but u could keep going on them for a little while.
but be warned, if they do go while your driving u could totally lose control of the car and end up with a tree for a radiator or somthing. if you can afford it, just pay to get them fixed.

When mine packed up i lost drive in the front left wheel (hadn't realised i had damaged it when i hit the roundabout guter so it stopped about a week later), lucky it happened while going out of my driveway at about 5km/h not 110 down the highway. Your best bet is to replace them ASAP but a friend of mines clicked at him for another 10,000 kms and was still working when the engine blew (which is why i have it now in my backyard) so you could be lucky.

not hard to replace yourself if you get the parts, just a pointer tho the passanger side half shaft mount is different on a tp to others

It's not worth the drama of Not replacing them. As with all repairs shop around, I'm not sure where you are but if your in Melbourne call 9384 0401 Magna Brunswick and tell them Tess said to call. They better look after you after the thousands I spent their on my old TN.
This place knows the series 1 and 2 better than any place I'd used before. They rebuilt my TN after I did a little stunt driving using a Laser as a ramp and went passed it on two wheels a few years for. TN's are not built for hard landings....

Well, it looks like I will have to do them; thanks to everyone for you comments.
I am in Burnie Tasmania, and the only place I have asked is in Devonport (the CV centre), has anyone any experence with them, or anywhere else on the north coast.
