Hi,

I have a question about insurance..

I want to put a muffler on my car, but my insurance agency, aami, said that i cant put any performance enhancing modifications, does anyone know if a larger muffler and tip would void that?

Anyone had any experiences with this?

Thanks

i have my insurance with them as well and asked them about that only a couple of weeks ago. It depends how old you are but for me (age 22) I am allowd 2 cosmetic mods (like a bodykit) and NO performance mods including exhaust and lowering. I think I can get perf. mods after 25. If I want them now they said go to Just Car Insurance (which is part of AAMI anyway).

If you wanted coverage you would have to tell them about your mods(otherwise they wont pay if you claim) but if you do tell them what you have done they wont cover you anymore. catch 22. go to just cars.

I've fitted a straight through muffler with a conservative chrome tip; if insurance question it I will say my old one rusted (true) and I wanted to go for a stainless steel one, which is why the exhaust shop recommended I get this one.

Effectively you do have a "duty of disclosue" to them but that could be interpreted in many ways. For example if they were really being assholes they could roll you for having not fitted OEM brake pads since it would be a "modification" However most insurance firms will see minor changes that are not detrimental to the safety or roadwortiness of the vehicle as being OK.

what if you fitted the oem sports muffler that mitsi makes ?

then its a genuine part

i am with AAMI and they said muffler was ok... and i'm under 25.... they also said a pod filter would be ok.... :D

i did tell them that both of them were to improve economy and sound though.....which they do....

Try NRMA. They are pretty good on price and faily good on mods. My sister is 21 and is buying a car at the moment. She rang for insurance prices and got NRMA at $800 full comprehensive and Suncorp-Metway at $1800 with the rest inbetween every $200.
