We have a TE with about 1cm of freeplay in the steering (while engine on) That unfortunatly is coupled with a warped front brake disc. The result is a knock through the steering wheel due to one brake "Grabbing" and knocking against the freeplay in the steering!

Is there any way of adjusting the play in the steering on the TE?
I don't think its a bush as the play appears on the steering wheel, and is not bad enough to make the car wander (Yet) all over the road. I guess getting the discs machined will stop the knocking, but I am a little concerned about the play.

I have the same freeplay in my steering. Steering rack and bushes have been checked ok. Im thinking its one of the joints in the rods between the steering wheel and the actual rack. Not sure what its called.

I also have a TE with free play. Is it a common prblem because ive just gotten used to it. Would love to get rid of it but also love my money. If someones fixed it would love to know what is causing it.

Same thing. Normal wear, especially with wider tyres creatng more stress n the steering. It's the steering "gear" if u wish - a box where the steering arm goes thru the firewall and goes in to the steering gear box etc. I haven't yet inquired about the cost of the box tho.
Shouldn't be too difficult to replace, but some "under dash, at pedals" work is required.
I'm in process of fixing it soon, cos it's not safe as such.

Got the same problem with my TH, asked 2 mechanics, both told me not to bother too much because its just a normal wear. It gets pretty anoying specially on a freeway stretch then your steering would turn left to right but your still running on a straight line

Correction to my previous "assumption" after doing some more reading... Changing the steering box and rack is pretty big job. Cross member needs to be removed first, airbag disengaged etc stuff. Ah, bugger.
I might entertain my self and call Mitsu to ask for a quote.... :bowrofl:
Pedders couldn't give me exact figure, but assumed few hours of labor - plus, that original Mitsu part would be used, since Pedders don't do such parts. I guess it would go up to a grand in total if I got it done, that is.
Wonder how much play there can be before it is considered unroadworthy by RTA?

Surely there's SOME way of adjusting out this tiny amount of play!?
