Howdy!
My TJ has a rattle in the engine somwhere on start-up. It sounds like an exhaust manifold or whatever type of rattle, but im not sure. I have taken it to Mitsubishi a number of times as it's under warranty still, but there not helpfull at all. They said they can't find anything, and have compared my car against other TJ's there, and they all sound the same. Weird...

manual or auto? the manual gearbox gets a hell of a racket going when they are cold...

EDIT: Could this be the wrong oil consistancy? eg: the oil is to thin??? someone who knows stuff about oil might be able to help....

Maybe get em to check starter motor. My TE did this and i took it to get checked the next day, starter motor wasnt fully disengaging from the motor. might not be that, but still...

id say its a muffler or something in the exhaust from what i hear is pretty common
i got mine replaced bout 30k ago under warranty
and its comming back now. and im out of warranty
so looks like extractors and full custom exhaust is in order in a little while

TJ AWD

got the same rattle - sounds like the pulleys to me - had it check - the dealer found that battery bracket was loose and adjusted it but that did sweet F-All to fix it. I think it could be an one of those features that "were not in the brochure!"

I had this problem, I tokk it to mitsu a few times before and they couldn't help, but now i know.

Is the rattle fromt he engine when u change gears when stationary. I had this problem and the engine mount at the rear is soft as ****. I'd have a look at that mate.

TS I have had a TJ auto for 3.5 years It had 47000 k when purchased, now has 90000 k. It has always had the rattle when I accelerate after start up. I believe it could be a plastic shroud. The car has done 43000 k with the noise. I get an oil change and general check every 7500 k and beside the noise the car has been brilliant. I would not worry about the noise to much

I dont know if it is the same rattle or not but I have had the front section of my exhaust replaced twice in two years under warranty, mitsi knew about it cause the second time it got replaced I didnt think it could be the same thing but the rep told me it is a common problem as he has a vrx and had the same thing go on him.Whem I asked about a solution cause i run out of new car warranty soon the answer was to wait for new car warranty to run out and fit extractors. The noise was only evident at low revs sort of a rattly tinny sound.

Hi all.
I have a TL AWD Auto and it has a similar sounding rattle at start up( 1-2mins) which seems to be worse when in gear and on the brake. In nutral it is gone. when I take my foot off the brake It gets softer and after a few mins it is gone for the day.???? It doesn't vibrate the seats or steering or anything

any ideas. it sounds like the gear box oil to me but really I havn't a clue

It is due for it 75K service soon. Should I get mitsu to do the service or do the basic myself

catch ya

Sounds transmission related to me too. Good old tranny flush should do the trick. As far as servicing goes, if you can do it yourself, go for it. Mitsu will only get an apprentice to do it anyway and cahrge you about $100/h labour. Make sure you get the proper tranny oil from mitsu tho mate.

I am pretty handy with the tools, used to crew for Supertrucks and Aussie Racing cars. Just had no real experience with the magnas. I have the service manual, is the instructions for a tranny flush in there?

Chadstone Mitsu told me there was a common rattling problem with the stock headers/heat shield on the TJ. Sounds like your problem. Once it warms up, it expands hence why it only rattles when cold.

and this heat shield can be removed at home with no real probs? is it like most exhaust shields that do not serve a purpose anyway.

If this is the case I will remove it and see.

thanks for the help

I think you'll be okay as long as the headers themselves are still shielded. Excessive heat in the engine bay is not a good thing. Heat shield at the bottom is less important. Maybe there for sacrificial protection of the exhaust?:doubt:

To remove the heat shield, pop your bonnet, look straight down between you radiator and the engine and you will see 3 bolts that hold the shield on, grab your 12mm socket and remove it....easy...

It fixed my rattle perfectly

Mits told me it was the metal gaskets they use on the manifolds.. that what it is thats so common on the TJ rattly Exhaust noise is....:)

Mine was the heat shields, and the air-con compressor was stuffed too.. Was constantly rattling and clunking loud.. They replaced it, but the new one still clunks.. Not my worries shortly, am trading it in on a Monaro next week:D

not to cause problems or make anyone worry, but be careful removing undercar heat shields, the reason they are there is to stop you setting fire to any dry grass / similar things that you might drive over, and also to retain enough heat in the exhaust system so that the catylitic converter can actually work, they don't work if the exhaust is too cold...
Why not just tighten the bolts up people? use some brass washers or something to make it nice and snug...

Be careful if you tighten the bolts though. They get brittle with the heat, same issue the 2.6 Magnas have.

Maybe you can help me with my rattle (TJ Manual sports). Mine rattles from the front when going over bumps, or driving over bumpy roads. Thought it was the engine mounts. Could it be anything else ?

Going to get it serviced next week so any help would be great :)

The first post in a new forum is always memorable - hi all.

My TF did the same growling thing when cold when it was new.
Then at one of the scheduled services the dealer said that there was a tech bulletin come out about it in mitsu & they fixed it under that. Don't know what they did, however the noise came back when the timing belt was changed at 100k.
I asked my mechanic about it (not the dealer at this time), and he said they just loosen the timing belt a bit. He said leave it tight & the noise goes after a few mins - so that's what I've been doing now.
Don't know if this is reliable info or not.
cheers

Heard it could be the bushes or bearing on the top of the strut

there was a post about this not long ago
