View Full Version : TS V6 fuel consumption Q: How does yours compare?

When I stuck the replacement engine in my TS V6 the car had been sitting for about 6-8mths with about half tank of fuel.
Obviously it wasnt very fresh, but I didnt want to waste it, so I topped the tank with P/ulp.
Now Im continuing to use ONLY Premium or optimax where available (Im in the country, so its rare)
ALL tanks shown below were consumed over the past 2 weeks, highway driving, QLD summer, Aircon going the whole time (flat out).
I always fill it completely, within 10Km of the light coming on and only fill it to the second click, the needle always shows smack on the FULL line afterward.
Ok:
First tank I added some weird (chemtek brand) fuel conditioner and cleaner at about 3 times the reccomended dose and I got 380K from 54 L
2nd tank I added more of the chemtek conditioner/cleaner and got 410K/55L
3rd tank more conditioner/cleaner and 430/53 litres
4th tank NO conditioner/cleaner and 450/55 litres
this tank I added a bottle of Wynns fuel system treatment and I did 530k/52 litres.
So my Question is: What does your V6 get for similar litres?

Lately my driving's similar: "country" Qld, mainly "highway", so not much sitting at traffic lights etc. Aircon usually on econo, sometimes full
My usual fill is between 40 and 45litres, been mixing between standard unleaded and 95octane 10% ethanol (it's cheap from a place about halfway between my wanderings, so if I can make it there with the fuel I have I'll fill up there instead. Cheaper than Brisbane.)
The past several tanks have been a bit better than 10k per litre, eg 450k off 42litres, so say around 580k to 55litres (which I never have my tank go that low).
Probably can't say I've noticed any real difference in economy and power between standard ULP and the 95octane 10% ethanol. Apart from the 10% usually being cheaper. No negatives to using it that I have seen/felt.
Probably the worst I've had is maybe 380k off 45litres in bad city traffic. But after new (cheap) air filter, sparkplugs, a couple of hits of Nulon injector cleaner etc., I'd say I get at least 400k off 45l in mildish peak-hour type traffic.
Don't know if it's worth spending $220 to get a sonic clean on my injectors. Would probably run a little better, and get slightly better economy, but you'd have to do a fair whack of driving to make up the savings.
i have a V6 auto wagon. it's 1500kg.
i get 12L/100km around town. with a fair bit of country driving it can get down to 10.5L.
i usually use premium. when i do country kms the car is probably 10% heavier than normal.
i get a bit better fuel economy with premium- hard to tell , maybe 0.5L/100km better
so about 5% better economy. and probably 5% more power. bit smoother maybe too.

i get 450km\55litres
i get 420 from 3/4 full tank
it seems fuel consumption for the v6 varies much less than the 2.6L astron. everytime there's a fuel consumption thread for the 2.6 astron there's a big difference in figures-
maybe its more prone to lead foot syndrome...

Well I got a KS Verada XI, 3ltr V6 auto (so heavier than the TS V6 but....)
On a trip to melbourne from adelaide, the weekend after I got the car I filleded with PULP from mobil at the bottom if the freeway (in adel) and got to allarat (a good 500+ kms) on 3/4 tank, and since I didn't know the car I didn't wanna push it, but I was told by the previous owner once I get it pully tuned (since its got performance parts I didn't know of it will need a dyno tune) and valve stem seals replaced, I should be able to almost make it to melb on a full tank....
and that was with a/c on and cruise control set @ 110kph, giving it a fair quirt overtaking ;)

Around town, 550 - 600 Highway 600 - 700 depending on how hard I drive and with cruise off.

:o!
I serisoly gotta get ya to do my valve stem seals soon, then get my fpr tuned up right.... then I should see some decent eccon aye? going by the gauge I manage hardley anything around town :( like 450kms tops... and thats babying her.... What fuel did you use doing that?

hey guys,
iv got a 99 magna wagon and i get probably out of a full tank only about 480-530 and thats city drivin but if i go on highway drivin its more up around the 530 mark, its kinda getting to me why u guys can get up to 700ks highway drivin, i usualy pt my cruise on and yeah i can never seem to get it any better that 530, iv recently done a major service and tansmission service, also im always running shell optimax so i recon i should be getter better than that especialy since my car aint ancient, what u guys recon?

I recon that your cruise control is the majority of your problem. Most people i know (or knew) with cruise have often said that it actually INCREASES fuel consumption.
I guess that its because it accelerates and decelerates (often not even noticably) so often to adjust the speed and keep it at the speed you have set it to.
My advice would be to drive with cruise OFF for a FULL tank and see if you notice a difference.
The other thing is that it really comes down to the individual driver.... My stepfarter had a 1991, 744 GLE volvo and he stated to me that he was only able to get aroud 350Km per FULL tank (about 70 litres from memory) and asked if I could tune it up....
I took it for a drive to sydney and back, a 580Km round trip, and I did that on 3/4 tank.
I asked him to take me for a drive, he did, and he had the cruise control on. When he was driving us about in town, I noticed one MAJOR thing: He drove with one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake, he was nudging the brake all the time, then hitting the go pedal, it was a NON-STOP thing, and when I told him I drove almost 600 on 3/4 tank he didnt belive me, so we headed off to Albury, 400Km each way, and then he beleived me.
Moral of the story: Your driving style can (AND DOES) alter fuel economy GREATLY!

ta thanks for that and ill give it a go and let u guysknow how it is, hopefully i can get all of my 300 lost kms back into my fuel tank.

i think it uses more juice if theres lots of uphill/downhill segments where you might normally 'coast' on the downhill bits. i think cruise control will feed the engine fuel to just spin at a higher rpm than it needs too in this case.i can't see why it would use more fuel otherwise.
i did read a study done in the UK that found the best fuel consumption figures happened when on long stretches you accelerate in top gear from 70 to 90km/h gently(but not too gently) and then coast back to 70 then accelerate back to 90 etc etc... guaranteed to piss everyone off within 500m behind you though. however, i don't understand why this would use less fuel than just travelling at a constant 80km/h. maybe the study was for auto transmissions but i don't remember any mention of it.
wind resistance after 90km/h starts to make a big difference to fuel consumption too. not accelerating towards every red light with heaps of stopped traffic also helps.:-P

I have a 2.6lt 4cyl TR, but on a trip down to Wollongong I managed to make the trip using a quarter of a tank, mighty impressive...
However the trip coming back was a bit more hefty on the tank, had to use A/T alot to get up the hills
