View Full Version : Blue Dials

After seeing Killbilly's red dials, I decided to have a crack at it. I also have to thanks Killbilly for the helpful advice he gave me.
This is my 1993 TR. Unfortunately I hit a kangaroo, the reason behind the different coloured bonnet. Nothing special about it, just a stock standard Magna. For the time being anyway.

I can't take the credit for the design. I know bugger all on how to use Photoshop properly. A friend of mine created the design, including both the Ralliart and Mitsubishi logos from scratch. Mind that this is a first attempt.

Just a few points that should be made:
- The original dials are stuck down with two stick pads. These have to be gently pride up, but be careful not to bend the original faces.
- The needles can be a little tough to get off at first, so just use some blunt nosed pliars.
- Make sure the holes cut out for the needles are big enough. The holes I cut were too small, so when I put cluster back in, the needles didn't move.
Again, thanks to Killbilly.

There are 3 Photoshop images, all still containing the different layers to edit.

I have a quick question for those who have done this mod.
I have removed other dials from instruments before, and once removed there was no way to get them back to the correct locations.
Is this the case with the 2nd gen magna ones?
If so, then how do you know they are back in the correct position and not making the instrument/s read wrong?

They have little locating notches in them. They go back exactly where they came from.

sweet!
i was under the impression it was a guessing game into where the rev meter went back on...

Not at all...Just make sure when you cut out the holes for the notches...you carefully use the original dial as a template.
This mod is ALL about patience

oh patience......im using quite a bit of that atm trying to get 2 12" ported subs into my boot.......
the dials should be easy compared to this lol

Redo it in vector. Much cleaner results, and a $@#!load smaller!
Anyone know of any legal/insurance hiccups with doing these?
RE: EL dials - are they in km/hr? I've only seen the ones with miles as the major numbers, and tiny little km's as secondary figures.

Here's the first file. It the temp/fuel gauge.
http://rapidshare.de/files/10411590/DAIL_1_TEMP___FUEL.FINAL.psd.html
If you are going to make these be sure that the holes you cut are slightly larger than the original holes. The needles must have no friction against the paper, or they won't move.

Well seeing as we're on the subject of instrument clusters... here's my somewhat incomplete cluster... haven't changed the speedo needle yet as its a bit harder to calibrate (i wanna get it dead on speed, not like the factory 4km/h out).
http://img342.imageshack.us/img342/6793/dscf53998fz.th.jpg (http://img342.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf53998fz.jpg)
Might give this mod a go too... seems pretty straightforward to do.
Btw... sorry for hijacking, but does anybody else have the problem of a shuddering speedo needle. I get this sometimes and its really anoying (happened ever since i've owned the car). Just wondering if there's a cure.

Yep! That was the only reason I took them off in the first place. I had a spare cluster that I pulled apart to just have a look at and then I noticed the notches so I was like "SWEET!" and off I went lol

Do you have details of that anywhere... namely where's the blue lightsource coming from and what did you use to color the needles?

TUFFTR these wont work in your car, as your speedo goes to 220. 4cyl`s speedo`s only go to 200.
Correct me if im wrong, but for 6cyl`s, killbilly's thread about this has the download you're after :P

Sorry the files don't exist anymore. Rapidshare is crap as. They need to be on a more permanet sever.
BTW, I got sick of those dials after driving with them for about 1 week. It's too busy if you know what I mean. I did say it was a "first attempt".
I changed them to just white with black number. I've also painted the needles from the orange to red. Looks much better.

Well its cool to know that Magna drivers do have an imagination. I was surprised to see this thread as i searched the forum. Im a lucky gal as my partner( who is talented lol) Designed this for me as a surprise just after xmas. Thought we would share them with you all.
I havent had any probs except yes the needle holes at first. I dont find them to busy as they are not made of paper (gloss or nor gloss) but of poly carb plastic. They were designed through photo chop also.. The lights behind the cluster dont shine through except for the supposed places.. Let me know what you think..

Yes we had to of course to get orginals off.. LOL but when you do take them off you have to be sure to make note of where the needles where atlast used example the fuel.

my speedo is being a bit weird, when you brake it doesnt drop down, or, you will be doing say 100, needle saying 100 obvioulsy, come to a complete stop, and the needle will still be on 100!! then when you take off it drops down to the speed your doing!
it sucks! i miss its fluency!
Also, with those parkers, where did ya get em, how much?

You mustnt have made sure all the holes are neat and soomth edges. I did have this problem the first drive. But we pulled them apart and then smoothed them out and bingo no more prob.. But I would also check that you have pushed the needle down to far as this can restrict the movement either way (to loose even) it is trial and error with it and sometimes it gets annoying but worth it..
I explained lights in other thread to lazy to repeat it lol sorry
